520 THE WORD Ol' GOD COMPARED To LIGHT, Bookiii. 5· To purchafe a Kingdom for them. 6. To 1ave them from eternal Wrath and Death, and to beaow upon them eternal Life. And thus the glorious Mercy of God the Father fl1ines forth in the Gofpel: For thefe Things fully fet forth that the Father is gracious. And in the next place let me fpeak a little of his Juitice alfo, for his glorious Juaice as well as Mercy fhines forth in the Gofpel. Firit, It mu!l: be confidered that J u!l:ice as well >S Mercy is in God, as his Mercy is i,;nnite, fo is his Juitice, Exod. xxxiv. 7· Secondly, lt muit be granted alfo that Ju!l:ice was injured by the Fall and Sin of Man, and called for SatisfaCtion which was f1gnified, 1. By the Execution of the Sentence pronounced upon the Account of Man's Dirobedience. 2. By turning him out of the Garden. 3· By the naming Sword. 4· By the Law uponMount Siaai. 5· By many fevere Expreffions and fearful Threatnings mentioned in the holy Scrip– tures, God·is cmgry with the Wicked e'o·ery Day, his Soullothed them, He has whet his Sword, &c. Pfal. vii. r 1- Zech. xi. 8. Thirdly, In the next Place confider J uitice mu!l: be fatisfied or we mu!l: be damned, that God will not fave in a way of Mercy to the wronging of his J uitice. Fourthly, It behoveth us therefore to know what will fatisfy God's J uftice and appeafe his Wrath. And indeed nothing lefs will do this than perfeCt and compleat Obedience to the Law for the Time to come, and a plen , ry Compenliltion for the \Vrong done in Time palL Thou mu it be holy, pure, without Sin in thine own l'erfon, or have fuch a Righteoufnefs by F~ith imputed eo thee. \Vine will the Sinner now do? May be he will fay, I will caft myfelf upon the Mer– cy of God, that is tl!y only Way, but if thou haLt not an Eye to the Atonement and :.iatisfaCI:ion made by Chrift Jcfus, thou wilt perifh notwith!l:anding; for he that faid he was gracious, abundant in Goodnefs and Truth, faid alfo he would by no means quit the Guilty. Exod. xxxiv. 7· 8. The Gofpel fhews God's Wrath muft be appeafed, and that it muft be appeafed by Sacrifices, but fhould we facrifice 1000 Rams or r o,ooo Rivers of Oil; nay, do as the Gentiles did, facrifice our Children, or caufe them to pa(s through the Fire as the Jews did to J1-1oloch, and give the Fruit of our Body for the Sin of our Soul, it will not be accepted. And as a Child cannot, by being facrificed, make an Atonement for Sin, neither can any Man's Brother do it for him, '!'hey that tru.ft in their Wealth and boajl themfelves in !he Multitude of their Riches: None of them ea;, by any means redeem his Brother, nor give to God a Rmzfom for him; for the Redemption of their Soul is precious, &c. Pfal. xlix. 7, 8. ·what will the Sinner now fay, or what Courfe take, that he may pleafe God, pa– cify his 'Vrath and be faved? May be he will fay I will reform, I will amend my Life: This is good, bm alas it will not do: Becaufe thou oweit ten thoufand Talents. Will promiling, nay endeavouring, to run more in Debt pay off the old Score! Well faith the Sinner, if it be fo, I will repent and mourn for my Sins and pour forth Tears before God, and lee if that will do. Alas! fhouldeft thou weep Rivers of Tears, nay couldeit thou weep Rivers of Blood and nothing bm weep as long as thou liveit on Earth: Yet this will not fatisfy the Juftice of God nor make a Compenfation for thy Iniquity, this fhews God is juft indeed: And thus glorious J uftice fhines forth in the Gofpel. And now to fatisfy divine J urlice, Jefus Chrift as the ACt of Mercy is conftituted and appointed by the great Got! to be our Surety who entered into a Covenant to pay all and difcharge fuch Sinners who fhall believe on him: And that there IS no Pardon nor Salvation but by this vVay, viz. by Chriit, (1.) I fhall fhew. (2.) Shew why Salvation is by Chriit Jefus. (3.) Anfwer an ObjeCtion. I. That it is fo, fee /lfls iv. 12. where the Apoll:le Peter fpeakin0 of Jefus Chriit faith neither is their Sal vation in any other, for there is no other Name under Heaven give~ whereby we can be faved. Compartd with /!.'Is xiii. 3~- Heb. x. 5· but further to demonftrate it muft be fo, 2 I. Becaufe
