OR THE G 0 s p E L G L 0 R I 0 u s. .)2j the Light; '!'be Spirit foal! come upvn thee, and the Power of the fkghe.ft jha!l oterjha– .dow thee: 'fherefore alfo that holy 'fhing that jha/1 be born oftheejhal! be called the Son of God, Luke i. 36. 1. He is called God, but unto .the Son be faith, 'fhy 'fhrone, () God, is for ever a11d ever, &c. Heb. i. 8. 2. Not only God, the mighty God; His Name jhall be called Wonderful, Cou;ifel/or, the mighty God, tbe e-verlafling Father, &c. !fa. ix. 6. 3· Not only God, the mighty God, but alfo the true God; And we are in him that is true, ewn in .his Son ]efus Chrifl, tbiJ is the true God and elemal Life, I Jcbn v. zo. 4· He is called the only wife God. La!Hy, He is called God blelfeJ for ever, whofe are the Fathers, and of whom as concerning the F:lefh Chri!t came, who is God ble1Ted for ever, Amen, I~om. ix. 5 . Secondly, T he Gofpt! declares that he made the World, this proves that Chrirl. is God and greatly magnifies his Glory, he that made the World muit needs be God eternal, for ·none could do that but the glorious ]eho.vah; it is Tidiculous and mo!t abfurd to .think that the Creature cocdd make itlelf before itfelf was. God in rc– fpect of his infinite Glori and 'vVi{dom upon this account expo!lulateth and realoneth with his People, gloryin_g if I may fo fay, in the Greatneis of his Power and iVla– je!l:y, and thereby proving his ineffable Elfence and dreadful Godhead, !fa. xl. and all the Gods cf thele Nations to be but ldols, and that the fame Power in rclpec1 to creating, which is afcribed to the Father, is attributed to Jefus Chrift. SeeJobn i. I, 2. Fo,- by him were all 'Things created that are in Heaven, .and that are in Earth, <-ifi~le and iuvifib!e, Col. ii. r6, &c. compared with Heb. ii. ro. Thirdly, The Gofpel 01ews that Jeft1S Chrift did not only create, ·but a.Jro dotit uphold all Things that are created, who bei11g tbe Brighmefs of his Glory, and the exprefs I mage of bis Perfon, and upholding all 'fhings by the Word of his Power -:nben be bad by bimfrlf purged our Sins, fat drr..vn 011 the Rtght-ba•d ofthe Ma;efly 011 high, &c. He is be– fore all 'Tbings, and by him all Things corijifl, Col. 1. 17. Fourthly, The Gofpel fhews that Je!tls Chri!l: knows all Things, fuch Knowledge is too wonderful for Men or Angels. fn feveral Places of Scripture, the blelfed God ·doth prove his glorious Being by his Omnifciency, and that the like in refpeCI: of Knowled"e is faid of Chri!l:, is evident, and he faid unto him, Lord thou knowefl all 'Tbings, John xxi. '7· compared with John ii. 24, 25. But Jefus did r.ot commrt himlelf unto them becaufe he knew all Men and needed not that any fhould teftify of him, for he knew what was in Man; in another Place it is fa id, he knew from the Be– ginning who they were that believed not and who fhould betray him. Fifthly, The Gofpel declares that Jefus Ch.n!t fearches the Heart; (though this Ar– gument depends upon the !aft, yet for llluftrat1on lake I make another of it) he that Jearches the Heart, ought to be acknowledged and owned to be the almighty and eternal God, for who ce n find out the Depths and Dece~ts thereof but the infinite Ma– jefty ? '!'be Hear/ is deceitful above all 'fhings, and dejperately wicked, who can know it? I tbe L ord feanb tbe Heart and try the Reins, Jer. xvii. 9• ro. as if he fhould fay, there is none, fave myfe!f alone knoweth or can know it; but that the Lord Jefus who died for our Sins fearcheth the Heart and Reins, he himfelf politively alferts it, Re'1!. ii. 23 . I will kill her Children With Death (fpeaking of the Woman ]ezabel) and a!/ the Churchesjha/1 bow that I am he wbich fearcbeth the Reins a;Jd the Heart, and I willgive unto every one according as his Work fhall be. Sixthly, The Gofpel fhews that Jefus Chrift is the Fir!t and the Laft, and he that is the Fir!l: and the L a!l:, mull: of neceffity be acknowledged to be the everla!l:ina .and eternal God, for from this very Ground and Conlicleration the Almighty argue~ and reafons wtth h1s People of old to convmce them ofhJSDeity, and that there is no other God befides himft!f, I am the Firfl, and I am the Lafl, and bejides me there is 110 God, !fa. xliv. 6. compared with !fa. xlviii. 12. Hearken unto me, 0 Jacob, a11d lfrael my Called, I mn he, I am the Firfl and, I am the LPjl, &c. And that the fame is fpoken of the Lord jeftlS Chri{t; fee Rev. i. 8. 1 am Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and End– ing, which is, and which .was, and which is to come, the Almighty; Ver. I7· And whm !jaw him, (faith John) I fell at his Feet, and he kid his Right·band upon me, faying, I .am the Firfl and the L "Jl· Seventhl_y,
