Verfe +· ' It is evident upon Confideration that there is not any Thing which we believe con· ' cerning the Holy Ghofl:, but that it is plainly revealed and declared in thefe Tefl:i– ' monies. ' He is direCl:ly called God, Afis v. iii. which the Socinians will not fay is by Virtue ' of an Exaltation unto an Office or Authority, as they fay of the Son; that he is an ' intelligent, voluntary divine Perfon, he knoweth, he worketh as he will, which ' Things if in their frequent Repetition they are not fufficient to evince an intelligent ' Agent, a perfonal Subfl:ance, that hath Being, Life, and Will ; we mufl: confefs ' that the Scripture was written on purpofe to lead us into Mifl:akes, and Mifappre– ' henfions of that we are under Penalty of eternal Ruin, rightly to apprehend and be– ' lieve. It declareth alfo, that he is the Author ancl Worker of all forts of divin~ ' Operations requiring Immenfity, Omnipotency, Omn ifciency and all other divine Ex– ' cellencies unto their working and effeoring. Moreover it is revealed that he is pecu– ' liarly to be believed in, and may be finned ag•infl:. Alfo that he together with the ' Father and the Son created the World, 'Ihe Spirit of God hatb made me, Job xxxii. ' +· that he is the Author of all Grace in Believers and Order in the Churches. ' The Sum is, that the Holy Ghoft is a divine, diflin{t Perf<>n, and neither merely ' the Power or Virtue of God, nor any created Spirit whatfocver. This plainly ap– ' pears from what is revealed concerning him, for he who is pl:uced in the fame Series ' or Order with divine Perfons without the Jeafl note of Difterence, or Diflinetion ' fro m them as to an lnterefl: in Perfomlity; who hath the Names proper to a divine ' Perfon only, and is frequently and dire{t]y called by them, who alfo hath perfonal ' Properties, and is the voluntary Author of perfonal divine Properties and the pro– ' per Obje{t of divine Worfhi p, he is a di!l:inCl: divine Perfon. And if thefe Things ' be not a fufficient Evidence aRd Demon!hation of a divine, intelligent Subflance, ' I fball, as was faid before, defpair to underfland any Thing that is expreJTed and ' declared by Words. But now thus it is with the Holy-Spirit according tO the Revelation made thereof in the Word and Gofpel of God.' One Confideration which hath in part been befere propofed, I fball premife, to free the SubjeCt of our Argument from Ambiguity. And this is, that this vVord or Name Spirit is ufed fometimes to denote the Spirit of God himfelt~ and fometimes his Gifrs and Graces, the Effects of his Operation on the Souls of Men, and this our Ad– verfaries in this Caufe are forced to confefs, and thereon in all their vVritings dif– tinguifb between the Holy Spirit and his Effects. This alone being fuppofed, 1 fay it is impoffible to prove the Father ro be a l:'erfon, or the Son to be fo, both which are not acknowledged any other way, than we may and do prove the Holy Ghoft, to be fo. For he to whom all perfonal Properties, Attributes, Adjuncts, A{ts and Opera– tions are afcribed, and unto whom they do belong, and ro whom nothing is or can be truly afcribed, but what may and doth belong unto a Perfon, he is a Perlon, and him 2 ~
