'3· The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Grace, and the 'immediate efficient Caufe of all ~-Grace and gracious Effects in Men; wh~rever there is mention made of them, or any .Fruits of them, it mufr be acknowledged as .Part of his Work, though he be not ex– preffiy named, &c. G race is taken ·two 'Ways in Scripture ' '(I.) For the Grace, Free Love, and Favor of God towards us. (2.) For the gracious, free, a"d effeCl:ual Operations in us. In both Senfe~ the .Holy Spirit is the Author of it as unto us; in the fi rfl: as to Its 'Manifefl:ation and Application; in the fecond as to the Operation itfelf. The Nature, 'Excellency, and Glory of Grace in the latter Senfe we fhall in the next place inflrt upon, But fince fome Men in thefe Days as in former Times do much eclipfe the Glory of ·theSpirit ·touching the Work of Graee and Operation of the Spirit in Regeneration, •or the quickening them who are dead in Trefpalfes and Sins, in affirming that faving •Converflon doth principally confifr in a moral Sualion : lt may ·not be amifs to add fomething briefly 'here in Confutation of thefe Men whofe Principles are in our Judgment fairly Cl:ated by the Reverend DoCl:or Owen. • ( 1.) They ·fay that God adminill:eretll Grace unto all in the Declaration of the Doc– ·.trine of the Law and Gofpel. (2.) That the Reception of this DoCl:rine, the Belief and PraCl:ice thereof is in– forced by Promifes and Threatenings. (3. ) That the Things revealed, taught and commanded are not only good in them– {elves, but fo fuited unto the Reafon and Interefr of Mank·ind, as that the Mind cannol: but be difpofed and ir.clined to receive and obey them unlofs overpowered by Prejudice .and a Courfe of Sin. ( 4 .) That the Conlideration -ofthe Promifes and Threatening~ of the Gofpel is fuf– .ficient to remove thefe Prejudices and Courfe of Sin. (5.) That 4pon a Compliance with 1:he Doctrine of the Gofpel and Obedience thereunto Men are made partakers of the Spirit, with other Priv1·leges of the New Teframent; and have a .Right unto the .Promifes of the prefent and future Life. This, faith the DoCtor, is a perfeCl: Syfrem of Pelagianifin. Thofe that would fee his Anfwer hereunto., may read from page 257, to page 286. That we fay this, viz. that meer moral Suafion without powerful Influences and .divine Oper:ttions of the Holy ·Ghofl:, will not bring a Perfon effectually to believe and clofe in with J efus Chril\, or work true Converfion in the Soul, though we always fay the Power which the Holy Ghofr puts forth in Regeneration is fuch in its aCting or exercife, as our Minds, Willsand AffeCl:ions are fuited to be wrought upon and to be aff'eCl:ed by accordmg to tbe1r Nature and natural Operations, '!'urn thou .me, and Jjha/1 be turned, draw me, <VC will run after thee. He doth not act in them .otberwife than they themfelves are meet to be moved and move, to be acted and aCl:, according to their own natural Power and Ability. He dorh not rn our Converfiot1 poffefs the Mind with any enthujiaftical Impreilion, nor aCl:eth abfolutdy upon us, as •he did in extrac:rdinary prophetical Infpirations of old: When the Mind and Organs of the Bodies at Men were merely pallive lnfrruments moved by the Spirit above their .own natural Capacity and Activity; not only as to the principle of Working, but as to the manner of Operation. But he works Ot1 the Minds of Men it1 and by their own •natural ACl:ings through an immediate Influence and lmpre.flion of his Power. Create ..
