And it is certain the Ancients fa underftood it, as appears by their conltant Practice of Dipping fuch as were baptized; as '.Tertullian fays of his Trine-Immerfion, 'Fer mergitamur, that is, thrice are we dipped. And that the Change of the Rite to AJPer/ion, or Sprinkling, was invented to accommo– date the tender Bodies of Infants, in thefe Northern Parts, YJ,1en the Practice of Bap– ttzmg them prevatled, is generouOy confeffed by Vojjius, and moll: of.rhe Learned.
