6zo Tm: L 0 R D ' s S U P P E R. . Book IV, at the Command of every Mafs.Prieft, or that he thould have fnch Power as to make the Body of his Savior, is fuch a Dream as the Scripture fpeaketh not one fyllable of, nor can any rational Man believe it. Befides, their Doctrine deftroyeth the very Effence of a Sacrament, which conftll:s of two Parts, an outward Element or Sign, and the in– ward Grace fignificd by it. Thefe Things being well confidered, it is evident thefe Words, this is my Body, are to be taken figuratively, i. e. this is a Sign of my Body, or this is the Sacrament of my Body; fo that from the Manner of the Words fpoken by Chrift, there is no Neceffity to take them as the Papjfts do, feeing it is fo frequent with the Holy Gho!t to ufe Metaphors in this Kmd; l need not name them, confidering it is the Suojcct of our prefent Work. '!'he feven Kine are fe'!Jm rears; the feven Ears of Corn are Jeven rears; the Stars are the Angels of the fcven Churches ; the feven Heads are !even Mountains, &c. Chriil: is called a Rock, a L amb, a L io11, a Door, too-ether with many other Things, which we have fpoken unto. See the fecond Head of 0 Nletaphors, Simi/ies, &c. The Saints are called Sheep, Brmlches, &c. ' The Meaning of all this is, faith 'Dr. Prefton, they are like fnch and fuch Things; but yet it is the Manner of the • Scripture-Speech, and therefore, faith he, it is not neceffary thole vVords fhould be taken in a proper Senfe, as they are by the Papif\s.• . 'Objetl. But, faith the worthv Doctor, you will object: r ea, but in a Matter of this 'moment, as a Sacrament, the Lord Jpeaks di)lintl/:y and exprefs/:y; there be ufeth no • Metaphor, though in other Cafes he doth. 'Anfw. To this, faith he, I anfwer briefly: It is fo far from being true, that he ' ufeth them not in the Sacrament, that there are none of all the SJcraments but it is ·c ufed, viz. in the Sacrament of Circumcifion, '!'his is the Covenant, &c. ln the ' Sacrament of the Palfover, which were the Sacraments of the Old Law the L amb ' is called the Paffover. In this very Sacrament, to go no further, for inftance, take ' but the fecond Part of it, '!'his is the Cup of the New 'l'eftament in my Blood: Here • are not one but divers Figures. The Cup is taken for the Liquor in it; the Wine in ' the Cup is taken for Chri!l:'s Blood; '!'his is the New 'l'ejlament, &c. that is, the ~eal • of the New Teftament.' H ere is Figure upon Figure, fai th :Ylr. Pool, and yet the Papifts have the Impudence to reproach us for putting in but one Figure, which they confefs the Holy Ghoft frequently maketh ufe of. Wonder, 0 Heavens! and judge 0 Earth, whether thefe Men do not !train at Gnats, and fwallow Camels, &c. This openeth a Way for us to our next Work, wh ich is to run the Parallel concern– ing thofe figurative and metap~orical Expreffions of the Lord Jcfus Chrilr, ufed at the Inftitmion of the holy Eucharift, Matt. xxvi. 26. Jefus took Bread, mzd blef!ed it, and /;rake it, and gave to his Difciples, and Jaid, 'l'ake, eat, this is my Body. METAPHOR. I. CHRIST took Bread after he had fupped, &c. li. Chri£1: blelfed the Bread: He took the Bread, andgave '!'hanks. Ill. Chrif\ brake the Bread. Corn, we know, is bruifed, or ground in a Mill, that fo it may become meet Bread for our Bodies. IV. Chri£1: gave the Bread to his Difciples : He took Bread, and bleffid it, and brake it, and gave it to his Difaples. V. The Difciples took the Bread. Note by the Way, it is called Bread when Chri£1: took it, it is called Bread after he bleffed it, and it was Bread the Difciples took. PARALLEL. I. THIS, in the Judgment of feme Divines, notes God's choofing or taking Chrift from among Men, to be a Sacrifice for our Sins. I I. Chri£1: fanctified himfclf; he was fet apart to that glorious Work and Office he came to do. IlL ChriO: was bruited or pierced for our Sins, he was broken as it were in the Mill of God's Wrath, which was due to us for our Sins, that he might become meet Food for our Souls: It pleafed the Father to bruife him, !fa. liii. IV. Signifying not only his giving himfelf for us, but his giving himfelf freely with all his Bene– fits to us. V. Which holds forth our taking or accepting ofChri!t the Bread ofLife, as the only Food of our Souls. • Dr. Pu)lo1t of the Sain:i ~aEfic:ation,, P· +7 8. VI. Unlefs
