This 'frope may more rightly be called Antiphrajis, which ufes Words contrary to their proper Meaning, or _original and genuine Sr:n{e; a~1,!fJp!Xrn~, Sern;o per contrarium intclligendus, ex avn contra, & ~p.xSw dico. It may be difringuifhed into., 1. Words Gngly or by themfelves, conGdcred, which is called Antiphrajis. 2. Words fo placed or difpofcci in a Sentence, as denote Derifion, or a Kind of a Mock, which vulgarly is called an Iro11y, of which Sarcafmus is a certain Kind, which is !harper than an Irony, as when one infults over them that are opprdfeQ, with Calamities. Antiphrafis of Words jingly, or by themfelves conjidered. soMETIMES one and the fame Word has contrary Significations, as 1"1:1 Barak, which properly Ggnifies to blefs, as Gm. xii. :!· and xxiv. 35· 2 Sam. viii. IO. Pfal. xxxiv. t. and many other Places, is ufed in a contrary Senfe by an Antiphrajis, as I Kings xxi. I o. Set two Men before him, Sons of Belial, to bear W.itnefs againfl him, Jaying, 'I'hou didfl blefs God and the Kiug, which Pagninus, the Chald. Paraph. and our Verfion do render, thou did!t curfe or blafpheme God and the King. So Verfe 13. where the Execution of this wicked ']ezebe/'s Command is defcribed. Her Error (fay they) was, lhe judged him wicked, becaufe thus [mitten, and that he trufted upon l11s own lntegnty, &c.
