'l'o lift up the Hand (as Exod. vi. 8. foe fo the Hebrew is) fignifies to fwe~r, as alfo, Deut. Xllxii, 40. Ezek. J<X. 5, 6: and xxxvi. 7, &c. R. Salomon and Aben-Ezra expound :j: Exod. xvii. 16. Of God's Oath, viz. Be– caufe the Hand of the Lord hath fworn [fo the Hebrew] that the Lord will have War with Amalek from Generati011 to Generation, that is, the Lord hath fworn by his Throne. The Chaldee expounds it rhus, it is a!ferted by an Oath, that is by the terrible One, whofe Majefly dwells in the Throne of Glory, that there !hall be a War waged by the Lord, againfl: the Houfe of Amalek to cut them off for ever, &c. Mofes ufes this Phrafe in Allulion to what is fpoke before, Verfe r 1. And it came to pafs that when }!Iofes held up his Hand, that Ifrael prevailed, and when he let down his Hand, Amalek prevailed, &c. 'l'he Right-hand of the Lot·d is exalted, the Right·hand of the Lord doeth valiantly, Pfal. cxxxix. 10.
