AN ANT HR 0 P 0 PATH Y. Book I. The Phra{e of Chrifl:'s fitting at the right Hand of God, being exalted in his human Nature, as Pfalm ex. 1. Matth. xxvi. 64. Mark xvi. 19. Atls ii. 33• 34· and vii.- 55• 56. Rom. viii. 34· Col. iii. 1, &c. is not to be underlloodproperly, as if there were a local !ituarion in a certain Plate of Heaven, but by an Anthropopathy* or Scripture Way of fpeaking, and is to be underftood of a Dominion and Power moll powerfully and immediately operating and governmg, as it is explained, 1 Cor. xv. 25. Eph. il zo, 21, 22. and iv. 10, Heb.. i. 3• 4· and viii. 1. ' ·. A FINGER is afcribed to God, by which likewife his Power and operating cVirtue.i~ noted, as Men work by the Help of their Fingers, Exod. viii. '9· and xxxi. 18. Pjqln> viii. 3· Wbm I confider thy Heavens, the Work of thy Fingers, &c. Some apprehend that there is a metaphorical Emphajis in this Place, becaute the Heavens were created with extraordinary Facility by qod, and built very artificially, as •he fine£1: and moll: precious Sorts of Workmanihip are wrought by excellent Arti!ts, n0t by Strength ·of Body, nor with their Arms and Hands, but by the Dexterity of their Fingers. By the Finger of God, the Holy Spirit is underfl:ood, if you e0mpare Lukt xi. o_o. with Matth xii. 28. becaufe it refpeCl:s the Virtue and Power of its Operation, as Atls x. 38, &c. • If a Man's Fingers t be contra<'l:ed, it is called the Hollow of his Hand, if extended, a Span, which by an Anthropopathy are afcribed to God, !fa. xl. 12. Who bath mea– Jured the Waters in the Hollow of his Hanii? and meted out the Heavens with a Span, &c. that is to fay, the Lord hath done it; denoting how eafy it is ro create all Things, and moft powerfully to fupport and govern what he has created: For es Men by Engines and Devices do lift up and advance huge Weights, &c. fo it is much more eafy for God to rule and dilpofe the whole Univerfc at his Plealure, Prov. xxx. 4, &c. !fa. xlviii. 13, &c. A HEAR'!' is attributed to God, by which either his lively Ejfmce is denoted, as the Heart in Man is judged to be the Principle or Beginning of Life, Gen. vi. 6. It grieved him at the Heart, that is, in himfelf- or elle his Will and Decree, as Gm. viii. 21. '!'he Lord [aid in his Heart, that is, he decreed and appo;nred Chald. [He [aid in his Word,] Jer. xix. 5· It came not up into mine Heart, fo the Hebrew, that is, I did neither witl nor command it: For the Scripture makes the Heart the Sear of the Soul, whofe Pro– perty it is to think, will, and dilcern. More efpecially it lignifies the good Pleafure and Approbation of God, t Sam. xiii. 14- 'l'he Lord fought him a Man after his own Heart, that is, his t Favor, or good will. So Atls xiii. 22, &c. Jer. xxxii. 41. I will plant them in this Land aJ!iwedly, with my whole Heart; and with my whole Soul, that is, with the greardt Benevolence, Regard. and good Will. · BOWELS are attributed to God, by which his Mercy and moll ardent Love is ex– preJfed, !fa. lxiii. 15. Where is thy Zeal and thy Strength, the Sounding of thy Bowels, and of thy Mercies towards me? Jer. xxxi. 20. My Bowels are troubled for him, that is, for Ephraim, Luke i. 78. 'l'hrough the Bowels Uof the Mercy of our God, whereby the Day-fpring from 011 high bath vifited us. Hence comes the Verb ~"'-"YX"(r.&o:,, miferi– <ordia commoveri, to be moved with Compaffion, which is frequently faiJ of Chrift, as Matth. ix. 36. xiv. 1'1· and xv. 32. Mark i. 41. and vi. 34, &c. See Gen. xliii. 29. 1 Kings iii. 2b. Pfalm li. 3· See Ifa.lxiii. 7, &c. where the Hebrew Word§ that fianifies Bo-wels and compaffwnare Love is afcribed to God. 11/yricus **upon the Place f~ys,That this Metaphor is deduced from the Love of Afothers to their Children, which they bear in their Wombs, (the fame HebrewWord fignifying Bowels and Womb) becaufe the Seat of Affe<'l:ion is in the Bowels, and fo metonymically the Thing containing is put for the Thing contained, or the Caufe or Inftrument for the Ejfetl- agreeable to !fa. xlvi. 3• • a'9eiAJ·T.'Gtr&.e0t~~ $1o'11'~f?rrJf"! inte/lz'getzdiJ t/ exp/ica7/ ejf. t Digiti1humani¥ conflituitur pugillu!, Ji t()ll!rab.t:Jitr, t .JPitbama, jiextentlattlur, t Hoc tj}, ,uJ'ox1av, fa'Vorem, luneplacitum foum. 11 So the Greek runs, ina (l"r.Aa."/Xla, per <vijur 1 mifericordi.e Dei nojlri. § r::m'1,jign!ficat uterum.
