T !I E c H u R c H 0 F R 0 M E,- Book IV. roanging at his Girdle: All thefe will appear as clear Demonftrations, that tbe Head af Rome Papal is the Head of Babylon, and the grand lmpofl:or, or the capital Mana– ger of this Myftery of fniquity, he having, moft facrilegiouOy, alfumed to himfelf all heavenly Power of damning or faving, and all earthly Power, both Temporal or Civil, and E~clefiafl:ical or Sacred. ( L • -) This wicked Babylonijh State comes forth with a great Pretence of Miracles, which are but falfe Signs, and lying Wonders, to deceive and cheat the People; and by this Means they conquer Nations, and carry away their Kings to their wicked !ote– refl:. This Rome Heathen did not do. For though the heathenifh Power of Rome did conquer Nations and Countries, with their Kings, yet it was by State-policy, and force of t'.rms, not by pretended Miracles, falfe Signs, and lying Wonders: Therefore Rome Heathen ·cannot be this Myfl:ery of Iniquity, or Babylonijh Sure. ( 12.) This wicked State, under Confideration, is declared not only to depart from the Faith by a palpable Apoftacy, but to forbid Marriage, and command a long Lent, and many other Faft-days, whereon fome Sorts of Meats are prohibited to be eaten; which doth fo fully agree to the Papal State of Rome, that nothing can be more plain, unlefs the Spirit had exprefsly told us, This will be fulfilled by Rome Papal. For thefe two Things we have their Canons upon Record, the which if none can rhew the like of the Heathen State of Rome, then Rome Papal fhall carry the Title of this Myfiery of lniquit.y, and Babylonijb Stat~:. _ 7· If the Babylon, under Conlideration, be only confined to the Power of Heathen Rome, then there is a more evident and apparent Myfl:ery upon the State or Power of Rome Heathen, than upon any Power or State that went before it, or fhould come after it; for fo the Text imports, Rev. xvii. 5· And upon her Forehead was a Name wrillen, MYS<rERY, BABYLON the GRE/lT, &c. But there did no fuch Myftery appear \lpon the Power or State of Rome Heathen, therefore this Baby/on cannot terminate there. What great Myftery appeared upon the Power and State of Rome Heathen, more than appeared upon the Power and State of the three foregoing Monarchies. &. This Baby/on can11ot be confined to the Power of Rome only in its Heathen State, becaufe Babylon is to continue till the good People fhall, with the Horns that did fup'– port her, which is the !aft Part of.the wicked and perfecuting Power, anfwerable to the ten Toes in Daniel's great Imaae, reward and deftroy her, for the. Injury that fhe did unto them, according to thefe iliree Texts of Scripture, Rev. xviii. 4· ·Dan. vii. 22, 26, 27. Rev. xvii. 16, 17.. And I heard another Voice from He.aven, faying, Come out of her, my People, that ye be not Partakers of her Sins, &c. Reward her even as jhe bath rewarded you, and deal unto her double according to her Works: In the Cup that jhe bath filled, fill to her double: How much Jhe bath glorified herfelf, and lived delicioufly, fo 'much 'l'orment and Sorrow give her. And the ten Horns which thou fawefl upon the Beajl, thefe jha/1 hate the Whore, and jha/1 make her defolate and naked, and jhall eat her Flejh, and burn her with Fire: Which the Power of Rome in its Hrarhen State felt not, but .ended its Courfe, without being deftroyed by good People, and the ten Horns, which is the !aft Part of the Image-government. And in the Days of thefe Kings, viz. ten Toes, ten Horns, ten Kings, jhall the God of Heaven Jet up a Kingdom which jhal/ ne– ver be deflroyed: And the Kingdom foal/ not be left to another People, but it jhall break tit pieces and confume all theft Kingdoms, and it jhall fland for ever. Which could not be fulfilled in what Conflantine did in the Time of Maxentius, as Dr. Hamnzond would have us believe, for thefe three Reafons: (1.) Becaufe the ten I:Iorns, that afterwards the Roman Power fell into, were not come up, and fo could not deftroy the Power of Rome in its Heathen State. (2.) Becaufe Baby/on's Perfecution, Mifery, and Confulian, did not utterly ceafe, which it muft have done, fo as to rife no more for ever, if the Power ofRome Heathen ·deftroyed by Con.ftantine, had been this Myftery Baby/on. ('3.) Becaufe though there might be a Body of good People with Conjlanti>t.e, when he overthrew Maxentius, yet the Power of the Kingdom was not fo cftablilhcd in the Hand of good People, as not afterward to be left to others, as the Text affirms, /lnd the Kingdom foal! not be left to another People: For, as we lhall anon fhew, the King– dom or Power that ceafed to be in the Hands of Heathens, and by a mighty and divine Providence came to be in the Hands of a worthy and renowned Chrifiian Emperor, .came afterwards into the Hands of very Devils incarnate, who acted all the Violence ;<:>f the Heathen Power over again, and indeed out-did them. 9· Thofe
