Book IV. MYSTERY BABY L 0 N. 1\1 E T A P H 0 R. Iron, and partly Clay; two States really diftintl:, that could never fa incorporate as to become one, Da1t. ii. z. From the Letter of the Text: I jaw a Woman fit upon a Scarlet– coloured Beajl, full of the Names of Blajphcmy, Rev. xvii. 3· The Co– lours of the Royal and Imperial Veftments the Angel in the next Words declares diclintl:, and the Apoftle in the Vifion beheld them diftinCl. 3· They appear to be diftioCl: from Arguments in Reafon: For ( 1.) The Beaft is in the Mafculine, the Whore in the Feminine Gen– der. (z.) The Whore elfe did lit and ride upon herfdf; an high Abfurdity. (3.) The Horns, be– ing of the )3ealt, !hall hare the Whore: If not diftinct, the Whore muft hate herfelf, even to Ruin and Defolation, which is nonfenfi– cal. (4.) The Beaft fhall abide, though in Captivity, after the Whore is thrown down or deftroy– ed. See Rev. xvii. 1 1. compared with Ver. 2, 4, 6, 16. 4· From the plain Confdlion of the Woman or Whore herfeif, who faith, I fit a ff<!fccn, I am no Wi– dow. Ergo, fhe bath a Head or Hufband, which is the lleaft, little Horn, or Man of Sin, that Paul declared fl10 uld rife after the Re– moval of the then prefent Power which did lctt, which the primi– PARALLEL. him, as Head of Holy Church, he will excommu– nicate and depofe them, and difpofe of their Crowns, Thrones, and Scepters from them. That the Pope is a temporal Prince, as well as an ec– clefiaflical Bifhop, i. c. makes Laws, exacts Tri– butes, raifes Soldiers, and acts as a Monarch, which fairly aftords him the Title of Beafl; that his royal Robes, Chair he (![s in, to his very Hofe and Shoes, with the Ve!lments of Cardinals, is Scarlet, no Man can reafonably doubt: That what the civil Power claims, and the ecclefiaftical Power exercifes, are not incorporated, or enrirdy mixed; that the princely Pope is in the Mafculine, and his Spoufe, the Church, in the Feminine, is owned by all Parties. That the Church-State doth lit upon, ride, and govern the Secular at Rome, Italy, and all its Ter– ritories; that the Church of Rome owns that (he is no Widow, but bath a Head, called his Holi– nefs, or fupreme Ruler of the Church, is fo evi– dent, that we cannot find them upon any File or Record of Controverfy. There remains therefore no more to be done at this Time, bot w frame our' Argument upon the Premifes, and leave the Reader to prove the We.ight thereof in the Ballance. Argument. If there be no vifible State in the Chriftian World, that doth fo apparently [![ upon, command, and govern the Beail:, or a great fc:cu.– lar Power, cloathed with fcarlet Veftments, as Rome Papal, or Church of Rome, cloth : Then is Rome Papal, or Church of Rome, the Whore of Baby/on here treated of. But there is no vifible State in the Chriftian World, that doth fo apparently lit upon, com– mand, and govern the lleafl, or fecular Pow~r, cloathed with fcarlet Veflments, as Rome Papal, or Church of Rome doth. tive Fathers, as 'Tcrtu!!ian, Cyprian, Jeromc, and others, underftoo.d to be the Imperial Power, in its pure, civil, iron, or unmixed State: Ergo, Rome Papal, or Church of R ome, is the Whore of Baby/on here treated of. To reinforce this Argument, we challenge any profeft Papilt, Arl1eift, or any elfe, to Chew where any other People or Parties are, to whom thefe Characters agree; and then we fh all be content to let fall our A rgument. X . T his Beaft that Baby/on fits upon, commands, and governs, is ·nor only cloathed with Scarier, but is full of rhe Names of Blafphe– my, &c. which may be taken in a threefold Senfe : (1.) For re– proaching the Name of God. (z.) For telling Lies in divine Things. (3.) For a!Cribing that to Creatures which belongs to God. Alld though we will not excufe the Beaft from the rwo fo rmer, yet for Breviry,s f<rke we fh all take the latter, viz. the afcribing that to Creatures, 2 X. Rome P apal, or Church of Rome, fits upon, commands, and governs rhat Beaft, or fcarlet Power, that is not only cloathed with fcarlet Veft– menrs, but is full of the Names of Blafphemy, which appears by his receiving, allowing, .and en– couraging the afcribing that to Creatures, which belongs to God, and to his Son, of which we give you but thefe In!iances: (I.) vVhen this human, finful, and wicked Head, is called Otlr Lord God the Pope, whether this is not Blafphemy againft God? (2.) When he is called, Univerfal Head of the Catholic Church, which none is but Chrift. (3.) When he is called the,Lamb of God, the Light of the World, the Root of D•vid, the Lion of the
