866 THE c H u R c H OF R 0 M ~. l'!ook IV. 1. She hath a Forehead broad enough to bear My fiery and Confuiion, for there is not a greater hellifh Depth and Confuf10ri to be found upon any People, than upon the Church of Rome, as will appear in its Place. z. Becaufe the Dilfenters, with refpetl: to Appearance, and the Exercife of Power, are very fmall and inconiiderable, in comparifon of that overgrown monftrous Body of the Church of Rome ; for to call the Dilfenters great, and the Church of Rome fmall, is as congruous, as to call the Ocean a little Spring, and the fmalleft Brook the Ocean. Secondly; Baby/on, Confufion, or a mixt Body, is far from that pure Order, which in Words Rome pretends unto, and can by no means agree to the Proteftants; for they are fo ftritl: in their Difcipline, that they admit of no fuch Mixture that deferves the Name of Confufion, they will receive none into their Communion without much Cau– tion and Satisfaction ; and when received, keep them no longer than they appear to walk ftrictly and holily, according to the Principles upon which they fir{~ received them ; and as for their Officers they are foon fummed up, being no more than Bifhops, or Elders, and Deacons. But the Roman Church may be called Baby/on, or the City of Confufion very reafonably, becaufe fhe fo fitly anfwers Literal Baby/on of old, that was her Type, and from whence fhe derives her Name; I. In fetting up another Way for Men to go to Heaven by, than what God bath or– dained and appointed, viz. a Tower of their own making. z. In having fo many Languages amongllthem, which is like the Corifufion ofBabe!. 3· In bearing the Glory and Sway over the Kingdoms and Countries of the chiefe£1: Part of the World, therefore called the Lady of Kingdoms, which is no Way applicable to the poor Dilfenters. · 4· In pluck<ng up, or razing out the true Worfhip of God, which was fettled at Je· rufalem, and fetting up Idolatry in the Room of it. 5· In captivating God's People, who were carried away into Literal Baby/on, 6. In their Doctrines, Principles, and Modes of Worfhip, which is fuch a jumble 1 mixture, and heap of Things, that may go for Confufion itfelf. 7· In their Orders, Diverfity, and long Mufter-roll of Officers, that are fo nume– rous, as well as unfcriptural, that if Mixture and Confulion may be thought to be any where, it is to be found in this Church, where you have Popes, Cardinals, Arch-Bi– fhops, Abbots, Provincials, Heads of Fraternities, Priefis, Monks, Friars, Followers of Dominick, St. Francis, Janfenius, Augufline, Capucins, &c. and what not 1 All which is many times more like to be Baby/on, Mixture, or Confufion, than the Dif– fenters from the Romifh Church. Thirdly; For MJ:ftery, which is in the Defcription, ir no where agrees to them, whom they call Heretics, but agrees very well to the Church of Rome, in four Things: I. In calling themfelves the Church of God, and yet are the Synagogue of Satan, that is a Myllery. z. In calling themlelves the pure Spoufe of Chrift, and yet an abominable Whore, that is a Myftery. 3· In pretending to be the Mother of Peace, Purity, and Charity, and yet the Breeder, Bringer-forth, and Cherifher of Divifion, Falfhood, moft bloody Butcheries, and bar– ba,rous Cruelties, this is a Myftery. 4· In being ~een Regent, riding upon the Beaft in State, and yet being that good Woman that fled into the Wildernefs, and abides there in a fuffering Condition all the Time of the Beaft's Reign, this is a Myfiery. See our fourth Argument: One Proof of their Church is vifibility; yet it is evident the true Church, for the Space of 260 Years, was to be in the Wildernefs, or in an obfcure Condition, &c. Fourthly ; Mother of Harlots, and Abominations, better agrees to the Church of Rome, than to Proteftants. It is againft the Principles of Proteftants, to allow Fornication or Adultery, in Per– fans of any Rank whatfoever, maintaining conftantly, that Marriage is honorable, but Whoremongers and Adulterers God will judge ; whereas Rome gives public Tolera~ tion .to notorious Whoredoms, and the moft fhamelefs and unnaturallieaftialiries, as · the whole warid knows. 2 Fifthly;
