'3· For this Caufe (among others) the Son of God is called the Word, >-oy&, for by him a Manifefl:ation of the internal Speech of the Holy Trinity (that is their Divin~.; Decrees) for Man's Salvation is made unto us, John i. r, 13, I4, &c. So much of Speech in general. More particularly Rebuking or Chiding is attributed tD God, by which its real EffeCl:, or Defl:ruftion is noted, ofwhich you may fee Examples, Pfal.xviii. Where 'l'empefls, Earthquakes, &c. are faid to be at God's Rebukes, and Pfal. civ. 7· that at his Rebuke the Waters fled, that is, were fepa– ted from the Earth, Gm. i. 2. , 'l'o Rebuke, in proper Speaking, two Things are requifite, ( 1.) That thot which is reprehenfible, may be checked. (2.) That it may be correCl:ed or amended; thefe may be aptly applied to God's treating Word, for when he faid, L et the Waters under the Heaven be gathered together into om Place, and let the dry Land appear. Rom. iv. 7· God's COMMANDING inanimate or irrational Creatures denotes a Di– rection for fame certain Work to be done or omitted, as Ifa. v. 6. I wilt alfo command the Clouds, that they rain no more upon it. See Ifa. xlv. I2. ANSWERING is attributed to God, when he is faid to anfwer Men's Prayers, 2 Sam.· vii. 9· Pfal. iii. 4, 5· Ifa. lviii. 8, &c. It!yricus fays, that in hearing God anfwers in a threefold Manner. (r.) By the very hearing, for every Man that prays earnefl:ly, requefl:s that. (2.) By fome Tefl:imony of his Spirit, that we are heard. (3.) By granting the Petition, which is the mofl: real and apparent Anfwer. Contrary to this, is God's SILENCE, wh~his People pray, by which his Delay in tomfomng and helping them is noted, as Pfal. xxviii. 1. Unto thee, 0 Lord do I cry– be not deaftoward me, &c. So Pjat. lxxxiii. 1. And God is faid to anfwer when he takes Pleafures in Man, Ecct. v. 20. and ix. 7· The Lord· is faid to be a WITNESS, when .he declares the Truth of a Thing in Fact, or juftly punifhes Lyars, I Sam. xii. 5· Jer. xlii. 5· Mal. iii. 5, &c.
