Book IV. s I N AN u N c L E A N N E s s. a Defilement and Uncleannefs s Sin, it is not in one Part only, but in and upon the whole Man, it goes quite through; there is not the leall: Part free from Head to Heel. :They are a/! gom out of the Way and become vile, vile all over. There is a double uni– verfality of this Uncleanncfs. 1. It defiles all Men. 2 . All 0f Man, not one Man in the World but is unclean by Sin, and not one Pan in Man but is unclean; view him in his Underftanding, Will, Judgment, Memory, AffeCtion, Confcience, Eyes, Hands, Tonaue, Feet, al l ]>arts of the Body, and Powers of the Soul are unclean. Ill. Some Uncleannefs is aCtive, prevailing and powerful, it encrealeth and grows worfe and worfe, and defiles, and pollutes more and more ; fuch an Uncleannefs is Sin. Man is unclean ac; he comes into the World, but this Uncleanne!S grows and p:-c.:vaiJs more and more upon him, by aChtal Sin he becomes worfe and worfe, and is morr. defiled every Day; it ftrives to captivate and bring the Souls of all Men under the de– filina Power and Pollution of it, Ram. vii. 23. IV. Some Uncleannefs is fo loathfome, that it caufcs fuch Things to il:ink as come near it; Sin makes the Sinner ftink, his l'erfon flink, his Life !link, and his Services .and Prayers, and all his bell: Actions to ftin!< in the Noil:rils of God. Sin is not a Spot in the Garment, or vifible Pollution in <he Face, or Rottenr.efs in the Flefh, though that is bad, and fometimes the ElfeB:s of this U ncleannefs, but it is Rottennefs in the Heart; all a Man's ln£rail5are as it were corrupted. What Uncleannefs, and abominable Filth and l'ollmion is enfJ1aring? Men and Women are fhy of, and ready at all turns to Oy from, nnd avocd any external, horrible Uncleannefs : But Sin is a bewitching and enfnaring Uncleannefs. All rhe bodily Beauty in the World did never entice fo many, as the Defornmy and fou l Face of Sin hath. Beauty and Comelinefs are the Attractives, the Loadll:cne ofLove;.
