An ExpDjition, ¥1;1ith'Notes j11ne negleEf. But what is it to fubmit all our aCl:ions to the Will ~f God? I anfwer, 1. To meafure all our actions by his revealed Will, that's theRule of Duty; we can look for no bleffing but upon thofe ways that fuit wiEh it: There mull be afubmilfiotJ to his fe6ret Will, but firll aconformity to his revealed Will. Lu!l: hath its ~11r..np;~?ct, its wills, Eph. a; 2.. but we are to ferve the Will of God till we fall a(leep. z, We mull the more comfortably under– take any action, when we fee God in ir, AGls 16. ro. He gathered that God had called him to Macedonia : So when we fe.e God in the fweet means and courfe of his Providence, or by inward inflintl guiding and leading us, we may with more encouragement walk in the way thlt he hath opened to us. 3· When in our deftres and re– quells we do t:lot binde the Counfels of God; Mat. z6. 39· Not my will, but thine be done: In temporal things we mufr fubmit to GaGs Will both for themercy, the means, and ttme of attainment : Creacures that cannot afcribe to thenifdves, muG: not prefcribe to God, and give Laws to Providence, but mufr becontent to want, or have, as the Lord plea feth: if any thing fucceed not well, the Lord would not; that's enough to filence all difcoments. 4• We mufr confrantly ask his leave in prayer, as before was urged. 5. We mufi frill referve the power ofG~)ds Providence, If the Lordwill, If the Lord permit : God would not have us too carnally confi– dent ; 'cis good to inure the Soul to changes. Two things we 01ou\d often confider to this purpofe, and they are both in the Text: 1. The foveraigntJ and dominion of Pro·vidence: the Lord can blafi your entt:rprize, chough managed with never fo much wifdomand contri- · vance; he can nip ir in the bud ,or check it in the very arride of exe– cution: and I have obferved, chat ufuallyGod is very tender ofhis. ha– nor in thispoinr 1 & ufually frufhateth proud men that boafi of what they will do, and conceive unlimited purpofes, w·ithout any thought of the check they may receive in Providence. 'fis aflower of the imperial Crown of Heaven, and che bridle that God bath upon the reafooable Creature, to difpofe of the fuccefs of humane affairs; therefore herein God will be acknowledged: Prov. 1.6. 9• A mans heart devifeth.hu lvay~ but the Lord direCfeth bu fteps: Man de– figneth., but che execution dependeth whol~y upon Gods Will and Providence. In peremptory RefoltlEions there is aconte£\: between us and Heaven about Will and P ower, therefore in fuch cafes the Anfwer of Providence is moreexprefsanddecifiye to th~ Creatures - lofs~
