Ver.3. the 17thChapter of St. J O HN, gi to the Father, he fent the Spirit to accomplith it ; to God the Son, who took humane Nature, and united it to his own Godhead ; to the Spirit of God, who formed, and fanetified, and furnithed it with Gifts without meafure. In the °economy of Salva- tion, the Original Authority is made to rcfide in God the Father. So that here is a fenfible Argument to confirm the Do Trine of the Trinity. Chris was fent, one of the Perfons took Fleth by order and appointment of the whole Godhead. The Di- itin &ion of the Perlons is by this discovered. Heb. 1. 5, 6. For unto which of the An- gels fail he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee ? And again, I will be to him a Father, and be (hall be to we a Son ? And again, when he bringeth in the firfi- begotten into the World, he faith, And let all the Angels of God tssorfliip biro. 3. it implieth the incarnation of Chris; Sect into the World, John to. 36. So, Gat. 4.4. God Out forth his own Son, made of a Woman. Chris's fending doth not imply change of Place, but affumption of another Nature. Now this Was neceffary, other- wife Chrift neither ought to, nor could fuller. Jusice required, that the fame Nature that finned, should be punitbed : If he had not been made of a Woman, he could not be under the Law, the Duty, or the Penalty of it. Gal. 4.4. He was made of d Woman, made under the Law. Our Sin was not to be punithed in Angels, or in any other Creature that had not finned, nor in Man made out of nothing, or out of à piece of Earth, or out of the Dull, as .ifdam. God might have made Chris true Man out of that Matter, but he was made of a Woman, one that was of our Blood, of the Game Nature and Effence with themthat finned : Our Saviour was not to be a Sinner, but partaker of the fame Nature with them that finned. 4. It implieth the quality of Chris's Office, he is the Mellinger of Heaven, and therefore called the Angel of the Covenant, Mal. 3. s. He is fent by God after loft Sin- ners. He is called, the Apofile, and High Priefi of our Profeon, Heb. 3. 1. God fend- eth out a Meflènger to bring Sinners to himfelf, as Wifdom fent out her Maids ; but Chris is the chief Meffenger and Aposle. And mark, he is called there, not only the Apofile, but High ,Prie¡i ; partly to (hew, that in all Ages of the Church, Chris is the chief Officer ; therefore the higher} Calling, both in the Jewith and Chriftian Church, is afcribed to him : but chiefly to thew, that Chrift, as he is the Anibafador to treat with us from God, fo the High Pries to treat with God, and appease his Wrath for us. Chrift is the Meffenger that goeth from Party to Party ; if he had not been lent to tts, we should neither know God, nor enjoy him; 'he came from God to Men, that he might bring Men to God. There was no knowing of the Father without him ; Mat. i 1. 27. No Man knoweth the Son but the Father ; neither knoteeth an Man the Fa- ther, fave the Son, and he to whomfoever the Son fhall reveal him. There is no coming to the Father without him ; John 54. 6. I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life ; no Marl cornea to the Father but by me. He came from Heaven on purpofe to thew us the Way; and to remove all Obftacles. This is Chris's Office. 5. It implieth the Authority of his Office. JefutChris had a lawful Call ; He was defigned in the Council of the Trinity ; his Holiness, Miracles, and Divine Power, are his Commifiion Him hash God the Father foaled, John 6. 27. As every Ambaf fador hath Letters of Credence, under the Hand and Seal of him from whom he is Cent : Christ is the Plenipotentiary of Heaven ; he bath his Commiflìon under the Seal of Heaven ; all is valid that he doth in the Father's Name, he hath authorized the Redeemer. Which is not only for theComfort of our Faith; Chris entred upon his Calling by Authority, which,I ¡hall improve by and by; but for moral Inftruâion, to look to our Million : Chris came not till he was fern. It is not good to cale our felves upon Offices and Places, without a lawful Call and Defignation of God. In Ordinary Fund ions, Education and Abilities are Call enough, and there we muff keep. It is a tempting of Providence, to think God will hlefs us out of our way,: A delire of change ufually proceedeth from Disdain, or Diítruft, or a thins of Gain s all which are finful. But now, in higher Callings, there mull be a foletim Million. Rom. to. 15. How Jhallthey preach, except they be fnt? they mi1(e be authorized by God ; the Rules he hath left in the Church. Our Lord jefus Chrift did not glorify himfelf by Intrufion 3 He had a Patent from the Council of the Trinity, indited by the Father, accepted by himfelf, and ftaled by the Holy Ghos: Zlfe. It fheweth three Things. r. The Love of God. Here are many Ciftumfta1ices to heighten it in yotr F ff Thoughts.;
