Partly, in regard of the different Fight of the other Enemies, that are Enemies out of Malice : Satan is not only a Tempter, but an Accufer ; as a Tempter, fo Chrift was to over- come him by his Power; as an Accufer, by his Merit : when Satan condemneth, Chritt is to intercede, and reprcfent his own Merit ; the Plaifter mutt be as broad as the Sore ; Iii far as Satan is an Enemy, fo far mutt Chrii be a Saviour and Redeemer ; by hia Power againit *e Temptations, by his Merit againft the Accufations of Satan : as the Devil is an Acculer, Chrift is an Advocate. Partly, becaufe Satan bath a double Power over a Sinner, Legal, and Ufurped : Legal, as God's Executioner, by the ordination of God's Juttice; Heb. a. 54. That through Death he might deflroy him that had the Power of Death, that la, the Devil. Chrift is to die, to put. Satan out of Office. l'lfurped, as the God of this World ; God made him an Executioner, we a Prince : john 12. 3 t. Now Jball t he Prince of this World be call out. Chrift refcueth Pritoners ; ifa. 49. 9. That thou mayefl fay to the Prifoners, Go forth. He will refcue and recover the Eled, when by their own default they put themfelves in Satan's hands. Partly, for our Comfort ; by his ownOSedience and Merit, Chrift giveth us a Right and Title ; but by his Efficacy and Power, he giveth us Poffetïion. He is to buy our Peace; Grace, Comfort, and then to fee that we are potleffed of it. Well then, own him as Jefus, as the only Saviour. AQs 4. 17. The Apottles Were charged not to preach any more in the Name of. efts. Rett upon his Merit, and wait for his Power. (L.) Rea upon his Merit. Troubled Confciences, that think to help themfelves by their own Care and Refolution, are like Men that are like to perilLin the Waters, and when a Boat is fent out to help them, think to fwim to [fore by their own ftrength. You mould be a Saviour to your felves, your own Jefus, and your own Chrift. God is very jealous of the Creature's Trutt ; and Chrift faith, Ifa. 45. 5. 1 am the Lord, and there is none elfe, there is no Saviour be fides me. You would purchafe. your Peace, con- quer your own Enemies, and then come to Chrift. No Many of yours is currant in Heaven; the Jewels of the Covenant are not fold for any price, but Chri[l's Blood, and Chritt's Obedience. God faith, Ifa. S5. t. He that bath no Many, let him come and buy Wine and Milk, without Many and without Price. He fold to Chrift, but he giveth to you ; he asketh nothing of you but Acceptance ; Will you take it ? They that re- fufe Chrifl, and refufe Comfort, till they be holy in themfelves, they have a thew of Humility, they would wear their own Garments, (pend their own Many ; but the Spirit is never *re proud, than when under a legal Dejeftion, we fcorn to put on Chrift's Robes, and are better contented with our own fpotted Garments ; as in out- ward things we prefer a Buffet Coat of our own, before a Velvet Coat of another's : This is peevilh Pride. (2.) Wait for his Power and Efficacy, in the ufe of Means. It is bellowed on us, by virtue of his Interceffion ; We are faved by his Lift, Rom. 5. to. If when we were Enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son ; much more being reconciled, (hall we be faved by bis Life. We are reconciled by his Merit, but Caved by his Life. He liveth in Heaven, and procureth Influences of his Grace; Therefore he is (faid to be) able to fave to the uttermofl, all that come unto God through him, feeing he ever liveth to make interceon for us, Heb. 7. 25. In Heaven he accomplifheth the other part of his Priefthood. He doth not work out a part of Man's Salvation, and leave the refì to our free Will : the facrificing part is ended, and by his Interceffion we get the Merit applied to us. But we mutt not be idle, we mull come with Supplications, and pre - fent the Cafe to Chrift, that Chrift may prefent it to God : Our Groans mutt anfwer to the earneftnefs of his Interceffion, and then we thall receive Supplies. The Word is called, The Power of God to Salvation, Rom. 1. t6. Thofe that confcionably ufe Prayer, and wait for Chrift in the Word, will find him to be a Saviour indeed. The Word is the effetlual Means to fave Men, how fooli[h and defpicable foever it Ceem In the World. God would work with us rationally. We cannot expel$ a brutith bent, fl6"c.
