SERMONS upon Serm.5. The words may be confidered in a Mediatory, or in a Moral Sence ; In a Mediatory fence, fo they are proper to Chrift ; he prayed to the Father, that thy Son may glorify thee, Verf. 1. Now, he faith, l hat glorified thee ; meaning, in the days of his Flefh. By a Moral Accommodation, they may be applied to every Chriftian ; every Chriftian fhould fay, as Chrift, 1 have glorified thee on the Earth, 1 have fin/Jed the Work which thou gavel me to do. Fit fl; And which is aloft proper, Let us confider them in the Myftical and Mediato. ty fenfe. The fìrft Phrafe is [ I have glorified thee. Chrift glorified God many ways ; by his Perlon, as being the exprefi Image of his Father's Glory, Heb. 1. 3. By his Life and perfe& Obedience, John 8.46. Which of you convinceth me ofSin ? And, Verf 49. I have not a Deed, but 1 honour my Father. By difcovering his Mercy ; John 1. 14. We beheld his Glory, the Glory as of 11.5 only . begotten f the Father, full of Grace and Truth. By his Miracles: then the lick of the Palfy was cured; it is Paid, the multitude glorified God, Mat. 9. 8. Mark r 5. 31. at other Miracles, they glorified the God of Ifrael, Mark a. 12. So his Paf$on exceedingly glorified God's Juftice. In his I)o&rine, by difcovering his glori- ous Effence, and the Purity of his Worfhip. The Syftem of Divinity was much per-, felted and advanced by the coming of Chrift. Doht. That God was much glorified in Chrifl. God was much glorified in the Creati- on of the World. Pfal. 19. 1. The Heavens declare the Glory of the Lord, and the Fir- mament fbeweth his handy-work The Fabrick of the whole World, efpecially of the ITeavens, declares his Goodnefs, Wifdom, and Power. His Goodnefs in communicat- ing Being to all Creatures, Life and Motion to fome ; His Wifdom,in making the Crea- tures fo various, and fo excellent in their general kinds; His Power, in educing all things out of the Womb of Mother Nothing. God was glorified in his Providences, efpecially in the great Deliverances of the Church from Egypt, and from the North; but molily in Chrify Redemption being the molt noble Work with which he was ever acquainted. It is notable, that the Spirit of God in Scripture often varieth the Expreffion ; at firft it was, Bled be God that made Heaven and Earth ; then, I am the God that brought thee out of the Land of Egypt ; then it is, 7er.16.14,15. It (hall no more be faid, The Lord liveth, that brought up the Children of Ifrael out of the Land of Egypt ; But the Lord Ilveth, that brought up the Children of Ifrael from the Land of the North : then it is, Bled be the God and Father ofonr Lord Jefus Chr ,Éphef 1.3. In Creation the Wifdom, Goodnefs, and Power of God appeared; there was no need of Other Attributes: In Providence, the Juftice, Mercy, and Truth of God appears, but theme in Chrift, in a more raifed degree. In Creation, the Objehb was pure Nothing ; as there was no help, fo no hindrance : but now in Redemption, Sin hinders; fo that here is Ihown, not on- ly Goodnefs, but Mercy. In Creation we deferve nothing, now we deferve the contra- ry. There was more Wifdom teen in our Redemption. The Quarrel taken up between Juftice and Mercy ; Mercy would pity, and Juftice could not (pare. In Redemption there is more Power : in Creation, Man is taken out of the Earth ; in Redemption, out of Hell. Gods Juftice oppofed Redemption. Chrift molt be fent to fatisfy Juftice, and the Spirit lent to take away Unbelief. God made all with a Word, he laved all with a Plot of Grace. In Creation, Man was made like God ; in Redemption, God is made like Man. No Deliverance like this ; Babylon was nothing to Hell, and the Brick-kilns of Egypt, to the Lake that burneth with Fire and Brimftone. When God delivered his People out of Babylon, he had to do with Creatures; when he delivered them from the Wrath to come, he had to do with Himfelf. Juftice put in high De. inands againft the compaffions.of Mercy, his own Son muft die with the Wrath of God, and his own Spirit muft be grieved in wreftling with the Denials of Men. In- ftead of our own Obedience, we have the Merit of Chrift. Oh, here are depths of Myftery and Wonder ! Vfe. God loth no honour by Chrift. God bath more Glory, and we have larger Demefnes of Comfort and Grace. to live upon. All Parties ate fatisfied, we have a better Portion ; ./fdam had Paradife, we have Heaven: God bath more Glory, the Creatures are moreacquainted with the infinitenefs of Mercy, Power, and Wifdom Innocence
