God is molt glorified in theCreatures Obedience, and fubmiffron to his Laws or Providence. (1.) To his Laws, when we Rudy to pleafe him in all things. Col. r. ro. that ye may walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleafng, being fruitful in every good Work, and in- creel' ng in the Knowledg of God. It is a great Honour to a Matter, when his Servants are fo ready and willing to pleafe him; I fay to one, Go, and he goeth ; to another, Come, and he cometh; to my Servant, Do this, and he cloth it, Mat. 8. g. It is laid of lbraham, God called bim to his Foot, ifa. 4t. 2. He went to and fro at his command : If God laid, Go out of thy Country, Abraham obeyed. (2.) To his Providence. It is an honour to him, when we are contented to be, What God will have us to be, and can prefer his Glory before our own Bale, his Hbnour be- fore our Plenty. And fo it was with Chrift, John 12. 27, 28. Now is my Soul troubled, and what fliall I fay ? Father, fave use from this Hour, but for this cattle came I to this Hour. Father, glorify thy Name ; that fatisfied him, fo God might be glorified. So, Paul, Phil.t.2o. Chrifl fhall be magnified in my Body, whether it be by Life or by Death. Asa Traveller takes the Way as he findeth ir, fo it will lead him to his Journeys end. We mutt be as a Die in the Hands of Providence, whether the Caft prove high or low, we are Rill upon the Square. 3. We glorify God, rather by entertaining the Imprefiìons of his Glory upon us, than by communicating any kind of Glory to him ; and Co we glorify him, when we grow molt like him, when we thew forth his Venues. r Pet. 2. 9. re are a chofen Ge- neration, a royal Priefihood, a holy Nation, a peculiar People, that ye fhould thew forth the Praifes of him, who bath called you out of Darknefi into his marvellous Light. The Children of God are a Glafs and Image, wherein the Perfe &ions of God are vifibly held forth ; his Perfeítions are Ramped upon us, that all that fee us, may fee God in us. But alas, moll of us are but dim Glaffes, thew forth little of God to the World. Thus the Creatures glorify God objeehively, there is fomewhat of the Wifdom,Good- nefs, and Power of God Ramped upon them, fomewhat of God to be Peen in every thing which he bath made. So Man much more. There are Vefligia Dei, the Footfteps of God in the Creatures; but, Similitudo b Imago Dei, the Likenefs and Image of God in Man, in his natural Excellencies, much more in the New Creature, gs rò gym, that we may be to his praife, Ephefr.t2. There is more of God engraven on us, when a true Spirit of Wifdom, JuRice, Holinefs, Truth, Love prevaileth upon our Hearts, and runneth through all our Operations : When we live as fuch as converfe with the great Fountain of Goodnefs and Holinefs. A Chriflian's Life is an Hymn to God ; his circumfpeét walking, proclaimeth the Wildom of God ; his awfulnefs and watchful - nefs againft Sin, proclaimeth the Majelly of God ; his chearful and ready obedience, under the harden Sufferings, proclaimeth the Goodnefs of God ; his Purity and Striftnefs, the Holinefs of God: the impreffton and Stamp of all the Letters of God's glorious Name, is imprinted upon his Heart and Life. A Carnal Chriftian polluteth his Honour, and prophaneth his Name. Ezek. 36. 20. ../Ind when they entred unto the Heathen, whither they went, they prophaned my Holy Name, when they [aid to them, Theft are the People of the Lord, and are gone forth out of his Land." But how can God be pol- luted by us? As a Man that lufieth after a Woman, bath committed Adultery with her in his Heart, while the is fpotlefs and undefiled, Mat. 5. 28. Carnal Chriltians are a lean- dal to Religion, they are called Chri(lians, in opprobrium Chrif i. Men judg by what is vifble and fenfrble, and think of God by his Worlhippers, by thole who profefs themfelves to be a People near and dear to him. 4. By that which is an immediate confequence of the former,by an exemplary Con - verfation, when we do thofe things which tend to the Honour of God's Name, and to bring him into requef lathe World. s Pet. 2. 12. Glorifying God, is not a few tranlent Thoughts of God and his Glory, or a few cold Speeches of his Excellencies and Benefits ; this is not the
