Ver.5. the 17th Chapter of St. JO HN. 57 SERMON VI JOHN XVII. S. And now, 0 Father, glorify thou me with thine own felf, with the Glory which I bad with thee before the World was. ECUs Cirri% as God -Man, in this Chapter, prayeth to God ; his Prayer is firfi for himfelf, and then for his Members; in all things he it to have the preheminence, as being infinitely of more worth and defert than all. His Prayer for himfelf, is to be glorified ; which he infotceth and explaineth. He infoteeth it by Guidry Reafons 5 the WI that he pleaded was, that he had done his Work, and therefore, according to the Covenant and Agreement that was between them, he fueth out his Wages. In the Suit, he explaineth how he Would be gloriftedd; I have glorified thee on Earth, and mow, 0 Father, glorify that me with thy felf, with the Glory which I had with thee before the World sods. 1`ot the opening of this Regttef}, I (hall propound feveral Qneftions. t. According to what Nature this is fpoken ? a. What is this Glory ? 3. Why he feeketh of the Father, the Firfi Perron? Could he not gkirifjl hinhfelf ? 4. Why is he Co earneft for his own Glory ? well. t. According to what Nature is this fpoken, the Divine or Flutnane ? The }3eafon of. the Doubt is, becaufe to the Divine Nature nothing could be given, and t}ië Humane Nature cannot be faid to have this Glory which Chrift had before the Weld was, for then it would remain no longer Humane. f Anfwer ; The Requeft is made in the Perron of the Mediator, God -Man, and is dífiinEtly and feparately to be applied to neither Nature, but to the whole Perron. The Perron of Chtilt was hitherto beclouded, during the time of his Humiliation ; now he defireth to be glorified, that is, that the Divine Majefty may thine forth in the Perkin of the Mediator ; and that laying alide the Form of a Servant, he might return to the Form of God ; and that he might appear in his wholePerlon, the Humane Na-, tare not excluded, as he was before the Foundation of the World. Que. i. 2. The next Queftion is, What is this glorifying ? t Anfwer; There is a two -fold glorifying; (r.) Pergtorre Manifefiationem. (a.) .Per glorl.e Callationem; by way of Manitettation, and byway of Gift and Collation. Both are intended; the Manifeftation concerneth both Natures, and the Collation, or Gift, only the Humane Nature. It mutt be underftood according to the Properties of each Nature, sue in tempore Chrifio dantur, fecundum humanam naturam dantur. r. For the Divine Nature, Chrift prayeth that it may be glorified by the dearer Manifeftation of his Godhead, for that cannot receive any intrinfecal Improveàtent, or Glory. ft is avleese4ss rh ¡ph/áSiï vy ; but fo fat as it was humbled, fo far it was gloria fied. Now Chrih humbled himfelf, not by putting off his Divine Glory, but by fur feting it to be overfhadowed ; as the Light of a Candle in a Dark - Lanthorn, there is a Light in it, but you cannot fee it till the Cover bt taken away. Now Chrilt defiretha that the Cover and Vail may be taken away. His Glory was not lefiened but beclouded# the Divine Effence that was hidden under the weaknefs of the Flefh, was now to be mania H h h fella
