S E R M ON S upon Senn. I o. SERMON X- JOHN XVII.7. Now they have known that all things whatfoever thou hall given me, are of thee. N this Verfe there is another Argument, why he (hould be heard for the Apo- files, which may be taken either from the Towardlínefs of the Difciples, or the Fidelity of Chrift : The one is implied in the other ; the Towardlínefs of the Apofiles, in difcerning the Divine Nature and Miffion of Chrift ; the Fi- delity of Chrift, in referring all to his Father, they know is, and I have taught it them ; for he urgeth not only their Proficiency, they have known, but his own Faithfulnefs, he had glorified his Father in his Dohtrine. Both which are Argu- ments; they that have made fuch progrefs, are to be refpelted ; and I that have been faithful, have deferved it in their behalf. I (hall firfi open the words. [Now.] Heretofore they were ignorant, but now i can fay this for them, they have known, &c. as a School- matter, when he bath taught a Child, looketh for his Reward when the Work is done. [They have known.] Things above Reafon, are known by Faith and Revelation ; by my Teaching and Illumination, they are brought to conceive and acknowledg it ; for he faith before, I have ntanifefled thy Name to the Men that thou gaveI me out of the World. [ That all things whatfoever thou haft given me.] It doth not refer to what he had received from God by Eternal Generation, as the only begotten Son of God, but to what he had in Commiffion, as Mediator : and he faith, all things mhatfoever, as imply- ing his Authority over the World, Verf. 2. Thou haft given him Power over all FleJh ; His Interell in the Elett, Thine they were, thou gaveft themme, Verf. 6. His Dottrine, it was given him in charge by the Father ; Chrift taught no other Dottrine but what he received from his Father : John 7. 16. My Doctrine is not mine, but his that font me. It was not of his Invention, but delivered according to the Inftruetion received from his Father. His Power to work Miracles, that it was not by Magical Impo(lure, or the help of the Devil, but by the Power of God : The Pharifeer would not believe it, Luke 11.20. If I by the Finger of God cafe out Devils, no doubt the Kingdom of God is come upon you. Mat. t 2. 28. If I colt out Devils by the Spirit, of God, then the Kingdom of God is come unto you. The impofition of the Mediatory Office, john 6.69. We believe, and are fare, that thou are that Chrift, the Son of the Living God. John t. 41. We have found the Mel ras, which is, being interpreted, the Chrift. The union of the two Natures, That I came out from thee, and was fens from thee, Verf. 8. And the Apo(tles knew this, Mat. 16. t6. Simon Peter anfwered and faid, Thou art Chrif the Son of the Living God. The Apoltles knew Chrift to be very God, and very Man in one Perlon ; the Vail of his Humane Nature, and natural Infirmities, did not hinder their Eyes from feeing him. [ Are of thee.] That is, ratified by thee as the Supream Judg ; invented or found out by thee, as the Supream Author ; all is from thy Soveraign Favour and Gracious Decree,
