For I have given unto them the Words which thou gaveJP me, and they have received them, and bave known furely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didit fend me. H R I S T (in this Verfe) further .explaineth the Argument that was urged before, which was taken from their Proficiency in his School, and that they had a right Senfe of, and Faith in the Dig- nity and Quality of his Perlon. This Faith is let forth by all the Requifites of it. Firfi, The Means by which it is wrought ; that is, The Word, the Do &rine given to him by his Father, and by him to his Apoftles; For I have given unto them the Words which thou gave me. Secondly, The Nature of Faith, which confifteth in Knowledg, and Acceptation ; They have known forely, and they have believed them. A334. s and yv&,s, are the two Ads of Faith. Thirdly, The Obje& of Faith, the Million of Chrift, and his coming out from the Father : That I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou hall feet me. Firff I begin with the Means of Faith ; For I have given unto them the Words which thou gavefl me. The only difficulty is, how the Word was given unto Chrift. Some think it is meant of the divine and infinite Knowledg, and Wildom, which was com- municated to Chrift by eternal Generation : But that is very improper, .uæcnnque Chriflodantnr, fecundum huminitatem dantnr. It is meant of that giving, which Chrift had as Mediator ; as the Ambaffadorhath his Inftru &ions, according to which he is to a& : Now faith Chrift, I have taught them according to the Initruétions which I recei- ved as Mediator. Theft are Paid to be given, to be infufed, and revealed to his Hu- man Soul. I. Obferve, The Word is the proper means to work Faith. We fee here the Apoftles had no other means of Salvation, than Chrift's Word; when Chrift giveth an account of their Faith, he doth not mention his Miracles, but his Do&rine.
