\ïer. ío, the 1-7th Chapter of St. J OH N. > t in the Unity of the Godhead, neither of them can be worfhipped without the other. There is a noted Story of Amphilochius Bishop of Iconium ; when the Arrians, who denied the Godhead of Chrift, had Freedom of their Meetings and Lectures, and Disputes, under Theodofws the Great, to the great disturbance of the Church; and the Emperor could by no means be drawn to fupprefs them ; Amphiloch»u, after he had tried all other means without Effect, found out a way Worthy of Record, faith Theodor et, whereby to make the Emperor fenlible of the Evil of his Toleration. One day as he came into the Palace, and the Emperor and his Son Ircadras were ftanding together, whom he had lately made Joynt- Emperor with himfelf; dmpñilochms faluteth the Fa- ther with accuftomed Reverence and Hurhility 5 but when he cometh to the Son, he fpeaketh to him as to a private Child, and ftroaking his Head, faith, How dolt thou; my Child ? without other Exprefton of Civil Honour and Reverence. The Emperor was exceeding angry at the Contempt, and that he had not given his Son equal Ho- nour with himfelf; and therefore, after many Rebukes, caufeth him to be dragged out of the Palace with Difgrace ; and as they were pulling and haling him, he, turn- ing to the Emperor, faid, O Emperor I after this manner, and infinitely more, is God the Father angry with thofe that do not honour his Son equal with the Father, but make him left in Nature and Dignity. By this fenfible Convi &ion the Emperor was vouched in Confcience, and with Tears embraceth the good old Man, and prefently maketh a Law against the ./lrrians, in which, under a great Penalty, he forbiddeth their publick Meetings and Lectures againft the Godhead of Christ, and by the Bleffing of God was confirmed in the true Religion, in which befóre he flaggered and wavered. All this is brought to chew, that God will not own us, unless we honour Chrift, and glorify him as we glorify the Father. (a) It is the Evidente of our Intereft in the Son. Thofe that mind Chrifl's Glory, he mindeth their Salvation. He is interceding for you in Heaven, when you are glo- rifying him on Earth; he is doing your Bufinefs in Heaven, when you are doing his Bufinefs in the World ; he is your Advocate, and you are his Báyliffi and Factors; Mat. 1o. 32. Whofoever ¡ball coated me before Men, him will I canfefi alfo before my Fay ther, which ir in Heaven, When you own Chrift in the World, and avow his Name and Truth in the World, you (hall lofe nothing : When you come to pray, Chrift will own you; Father, hear him, this is own of mine. You cannot honour Chrift fo much as he will honour you, When carnal Men come to pray, Chrift faith, 1 know them not. Oh it is fad to be difowned in the Court of Heaven I When Chrift difclaimeth any Intereft, or Intendment in his Purchafe for us, they are nothing a -kin to me; are none of mine. When we do all things for by-Ends, we difclaim God for a Pay mailer, and therefore mutt look for our Reward elsewhere. (3.) it is a ligo of your Interell in the Spirit ; John 16. t4. He fhiallglatifÿ me, for he Pall receive of mine, and ¡ball flew it unto you; that enlightning; quickning Comfort and Refreshingwhich we have, when it is ufed to the Glory of Chrift, it is a figs the Spirit dwelleth in us. a. Becaufe the glorifying of God in Chrift, is the great Condition of the Covenant of Grace. God hath made a bargain with Believers to give them Grace, and by way of return he expeð Glory. All the Priviledges of the Covenant are leafed out to the Heirs of the Promise, and this is the Rent and Acknowledgment which God bath refereed to himfelf. See the form of this Contra&, Pfal. 50. 15. Cali upon me in thé day of Trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me : In all Experiences of Grace God will be glorified. Glory and l raife are the Revenues of the Crown of Heaven, and all the Perfons of the Godhead are Joynt- Poffecfors ; the Father will be glorified, the Son and the Spirit will be glorified too. Well then, they that expe& all Comfort; and do not regard Duty, they mifake the Tenor of the Covenant. God muff needs be angry, when we deny him his Rent and Acknowledgment ; you forfeit your Leafe and Charter, and how will you do to pray with Confidence ? It is notable in the Cove- nant of Grace ; what God doth to us in a way of Mercy, the Creatures return to God again in a way of Duty. God juflifieth, fans ifieth, glorifieth the Creature, thefe are the great Bleffings of the. Covenant ; and in our way we are to do it again to God to juflify, fmtt&ify, and glorify God. To jultify God; Luke j. 19: And all the People that heard him, and the Publican' jufiifredGod, being baptized with fbe 7gaprifm of John. To fanctify God, Ifa. 8. 13. Sam9ify the Lord of Hop in your Hearts; and here, 1 am' glarfnd in them. We are to juftify God, hisWays against the Cavite of the World; P p p' iha~
