V er. ig. the 17th Chapter of St. JOHN. I. I (hall give you Inftances of this from the.Word of God. If. Difcoveries of this Y.cvúa, or Malignity. I[l. Reafons of it 5 and then come to apply it. I. Intiances of it from the Scripture. The World's Hatred is difguifed under other Pretences, but this ishe proper caufe of it. TheWord is the belt Judg of that, which is a fearcher of the Thoughts and intents of the Heart. God and his Word have the fame Properties. Heb. 4. 12, The Word of God is quick, and powerf , and fliarper than any two -edged Sword, piercing even to the dividing afander of Soul and Spirit, and of the Joints and Marrow, and is a difcernerof the Thoughts and Intents_ of the Heart. Now what doth the Word fay ? The Word of God doth tell us doftrinally that it is fo 5 and giveth Inftances and Examples of ir. r.. DoEtrinally, that it is fo. Let us begin with that place which defcribeth the firft rife of it 5 Gen. 3. 15, 1úd I will put enmity between thee and the Woman, and be- tween thy Seed and her Seed. There is' a natural enmity between the two Seeds, as there is between a Toad and a Man, a Wolf and a Lamb, a Raven and a Dove 5 fo there is between the Seed of the Woman, and the Seed of the Serpent ; that is, between Chrift and his upright Followers, and fo many of Mankind ,as fall to the Devil's (hare; an Enmity that will never be laid afide while the World is the World, and till the De- vil turn Chriftian, and be converted, which will never be. The next place is, Prov. 2 9. 27. An tenjuft Man is an abomination to the Ju, ff : and he that is upright in the waj, is an abomination to the Wished. There is a mutual Enmity between the Good and the Bad, fo as they can never piece in a firm Friefdfhip 5 only there is a difference be- tween the profecution of this Hatred : the Juft hate not.virrrm, but vitium 5 Sin is to be hated, not the Perron 5 as we are not to love the Sin for the Perfon's fake, fo we are not to hate the Perlon for the Sin's fake. A good Man abhorreth that which is evil 5 he loatheth it in others, but chiefly in himlelf. Or, as the Schools diftinguifh, there is odium abominatianie ¢ ofènfonis, and odium inimicitiæ. The Godly are of- fended with the evil Deeds of others, tho they do not hate their Perlons 5 but the Wicked hate the Godly, odio inimicitiæ, they have an inbred Enmity again(( them, and leek their de(lruttion, they hate them defpightfully, becaufe of the old Hatred. The next place is, John 15. 19. If ye weri of the World, the World would love its own 5 but becaufe ye are not of the World, but I have cÄofen you out of the World, therefore the World hateth you. You fee Men are divided into two Ranks, fouie are of the World; and Tome are not of the World 5 tome there are, whole Hopes, and Hearts, and Con - verfations, are wholly here 5 their Manners, the temper of their Spirits, and the coutle of their Worfhip, is wholly calculated for the World : Others there are, that neither conform to the World in Judgment, Affe&ions, nor Praítice, but wholly favour things paff this Life, are fitted for another World, breath after it,' and labour for it. Now let us fee what different entertainment both their meet with ; Come are dandled on the Worlds Knees, fuck freely of the Brea(ts of her Coufolation : Others are troubled, and mole(ted, and exercifed with all manner of Difpleafures 5 And why ? becaufe they are chufen out of the World, and called to the love and enjoyment of better things. It is true, there may be Contentions and Emulations among the Men of the World, as their Lutts and Intere(ts interfere and crofs one with another 5 but becaufe they differ not ig contrary general Principles and Ends, the Hatred which they have towards their own, is nothing fo violent and extream, as that which they have againft the Godly : and they do not fo hate one another, but that they can early agree in this common Enmity, again/( thole who are upright with God 5 as Herod and Pontius Pilate did, and the Herodians and Pharifees again(' Chtill 5 and Gebal, and Ammon, and Anoalek a- gain(' Iliad. Thus you fee Doctrinally the Scripture fpeaketh of loch a thing. a. By way of inftance and Example. Let us fee how this Spirit of Enmity hath been working, and how the Holy Men of God have had bitter experience of it. Abel was (lain by Cale. Let us begin with Cain, the Patriarch of Unbelievers. Now the Holy Ghoft giveth us a Comment on that A/tion, r John 3. sa. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked One, and flew his Brother : And wherefore flew he him? Becaufe his own Works were Evil, and his Brother's Righteous. The one was the Seed of the Woman, the Other of the Serpent 5 the one worfhipped God after the right Order, and brought the Firft, the Fat, the Tenth, to the Lord 5 the other was flight and caroled in Wor(hip. The Targum of Jerufalem, mentioneth a Difupte that happened between . them
