Art thou poor? fo was Chrift : Haft thou Enemies ? fo had He : Art thou difdained ? Chrift went this way to Glory, and fo mutt thou : He was charged malicioufly, blackned with Slanders, accufed falfly, 6c. the like ufage you mutt expe &. Secondly, With refpe& to God. How follicitous is Chrift about thofe who are not of the World ; compare Verf, 14. with this. His Father's Choice muff be made good, hie own delight is in thofe that are like him. Chrift loveth himfelf, and his own refle&ion in the Saints. Chrift is at a perfe& antipathy with the World; and a Chrillian loveth what he loves, and hateth what he hates. If you have the World's hatred againtt you, remember you have Chritt's Prayers. SERMON XXVI. JOHN XVII. r7. Santlify them through thy Truth, thy Word is Trutb. ERE is Chrifl's fecond Requeft for his Difciples. Where, Firfl, The Requeft it felf; SanlJify them. Secondly, The Manner how it is to be accomplilhed ; through thy Truth. Thirdly, The Reafon why it is to be fo accomplithed 5 thy Word .is Truth. The main Points, are the influence of Truth upon San&ification ; and that the Word is the publick Record and Regifter of this Truth. Now I thall make force entrance upon the Verfe. Firfi, The Requeft. And here, i. What he prayeth for. II. To whom. III. 'For whom. I. What he prayeth for, Sanïlification. r. Obferve ; Our chief Aim in Prayer for our felves and others, Jhould be to be fanai- fled. Chrift prayeth for San&ification. r. What it is to be fan&ified. To San&ify is, (s) To Confecrate, or fet apart for force Holy life. (2.) To Cleanfe or 'Purify. (3.) To Adorn with Gifts of Grace. Some prefer the firfi Acceptation,and apply it particularly to the Apoflolical Calling. San(lify them, that is, feparate them, and fet them apart for the Work of an Apoltle. So Chrift was fan&ified, that is, fet apart for the Work of Redemption. But it is not fan&ify them for thy Truth, but in or by thy Truth, Ës'r äNhecíá, and therefore this Scripture bath a more general refpe& and fignification. However, in the Work of Rolinef, all the Senfes may be taken in; for whoever are fan &ified, are fet apart, cleanfed, and adorned with Grace. (t.) Set
