Ver. t8. the >r 7th Chápter of Si: J OH N. 263 SERMON XXX. JOHN XVII. t8. !Is thou haft feat me into the World, even fo have I alto feat them into the World. IN the Context, our Lord had prayed for Confervation and for San&ification firft, he faith, Keep them through thine own Name, Verf. e r. Then,Santlify them through thy Truth, Verf. r7. in this Verfe is the ReaCon of the latter Requeft, why he prays for San&ification for the Apoftles 5 and the Argument which he ufes, is, 1 have feat them into the World. It was at Hand, and therefore it is fpoken of a thing done, I am about to fend ; or it referreth to his Ele&ion and Choice, I have called them, that I may fend them to preach the Word. The fame Office which thou haft put upon me as a Prophet, I have put upon them, and there- fore fanelify them. They that are fent abroad to preach the Golpel, need fpecial Pre- fervation, and fpecial Hoinfs ; their Dangers are great, and fo are their Temptations. So much Holinefs as will ferve an ordinary Chriftian, will not ferve a Minifter. The Meafures of the San&uary were double to other Meafures, and fo fhould the Graces of Minifters be double to the Graces of others. It is not enough that Minifters excel in Gifts, but they muff all() excel in Holinefs; they are to bear forth the Name of Chrift before the World, and therefore they fhould refemble Chrift more than other; do. This is the Reafon of the Context; Sane I fy them througb,or by thy Truth ; for I have first them into the World, as thouhaft font me into the World. In the Text there are two Things. Firft, The Million of Chrift. Secondly, The Million of the Apoftles. Together with the Comparifon be- tween them both ; ?r thou haft rent me into the World, even fo, &c. Firfi, The Million of Chrift 5 Thou haft feat me into the World. Here you may confider ; I. Who fends. II. The Nature of this Million, or what this Sending is. IH. The Ends and Purpofes why Chrift was fent. I. Who fends. Chrift faith to his Father, Thou haft feet me. The Holy Ghofe fends as well as the Father, yea, the Son fends himfelf. The Trinity are one in Effence, and in Will, and their A&ions are undivided; Why then doth he fay to the Father, Thou baß feat me into the World? I Anfwer, It is chiefly áfcribed to the Father, becaufe it is his Perfonal Operation. In the Oeconomy of Salvation, the Original Authority is feid to refide in God the Father, he Cent Chrift, and the Spirit fits and qualifies him, and the Son he takes Humane Nature, and unites it to his own Perlon. Now there is a great deal of Comfort in this, that the Father fends Chrift. The Father, being firft in theOrder of the Perlons, is to be looked upon as the offended Party, and as the higheft Judg. All Sin isagainft God, and it chiefly refle&s upon the firft Perlon, to whom wedire& our Prayers, and who is the Maker of the Law, and therefore requires on account of the breach of it. It chiefly refle&s upon the fielt Perlon, to whom Ghrtft tendred the Satisfa&ion. Sin, it is a grieving of the Spirit, it is a crucifying of Chrift,
