Ver.18. the 17th Chapter of St. J O H 101. 267 fee Chrift was fens, that is, fitted by his two Natures 5 his Divine Nature, that is fup- pofed, and- his Humane Nature is formally included in that expreffton, He was lent, that is, asùmed a Body, did not change place, but affirmed a Nature in his own Per ton, that to he might be fit to deal with God for us. And then (2.) he had fit Endowments ; he came to be loaded with Graces and Bleffings, and with all kind of Qualities to do Men good. John to. 36. Him hath the Father fant1ified, and fent into the World; that is, God's Sending, his Anointing of Chrift as our Head, with the Oil of Gladnefi above his Fellows. As the Head of the High Prieft was anointed, and thence the Oil dropped down to all the Members ; Pfal. x33. 3. It is like the precious Ointment upon the Head, that ran down upon the Beard, even Aaron's Beard, that went down to the Skirts of his Garmepet. So our Head is anointed with the Oil of Gladnefs for our-fakes. Chrift received the Spirit without meafure in our Nature, as Holinefs, Pity, and the Treafures of Wifdom and Knowledg. Look; as when an Ambaffador is font forth, there is not only a' defignation of his Perron, but he is fun-Mixed for his Emploiment and Work. So is Jetus Chrift Pent forth, that is, his Perron not only defigned, and chofen in Grace, and yet in Wifdom, but alto fur - nilhed with all manner of Endowments in our Nature, Grace and Strength for his Work as our Head. . 3. This Sending, implies Authority, and noteth a Commiffion fealed to him, fo that he was an Authorized Mediator, or an Ambaffadttwith Letters Patents from Heaven: This is the principal thing intended in this Sending, the Call and Authority Chrift had to do his Office. Heb. 5. 4, 5. No Man faketh this honour to himfelf, but he that was cal- led of God, os was Aaron. So alfo, Chrifl glorified not him [elf to be made an High Priefi: but he that Paid unto him, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. He was de- figned in the Council of the Trinity. And as every Ambaffador hash Letters of Cre- dence under the Hand and Seal of him from whom he is tent, that he may be acknow- ledged as his Deputy to ad for him : So Chrift is font as God's Deputy into the World, to ad and deal for him 5 and the Apoftles they are thus tent from Chrift, to ad and deal for Chrifl. Here the Companion chiefly holds, As 'thou haft fent me into the World, that is, given me Authority to execute the Office'of a Mediator; So have I Pent them 5 I have given them Authority to preach in my Name, and to deliver the Gotpel to others. This fending of Chrift, it maketh all that Çhrift doth in the Father's Name to be valid, which is much for the comfort of our Faith. Chris is not a Mediator by the right, or meetly by the delire of the Creature, or by his own Interpolition ; but he is tent and authorized, you may plead it with God, he hath rent him to fave Sinners. You know Mofer, when he interpofed on his ownaccord ; Exod. 3:. 31. Forgive their Sin ; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy Book which thou haft written. Tho it was an high Ad of Zeal in .PI'Iafet, yet God refuted it 5 Vert 33...4nd the Lord Paid to Moles, Whofàever hath tinned agaiufi me, him will I blot out of my Book So if Chrift bad been let up as Mediator, by the Right and Defire of the .Creature only, be might have been refuted, but he was authorized by God ; he did not glorify hitnfelf by inva- lion of the Mediatory Office, but had a Patent from the Council of the Trinity, in- dited by the Father, accepted by himfelf, tested by the Holy Ghoft, evidenced to the World by his Perronal Endowments, and by his Miracles. Thus you fee what thi§ Sending is; it implies the Dexgnation of the Father, the Q;salification of his Perron for the Work, and his Authiatity to =cute it in his Natele. III. To what purpore was he tent into the World ? I Anfwer, To perform the Whole Duty of the , Mediator, but ipriocipslly so redeem and initrud the World; thofe two (ices of Prophet and Pities, Chris performed upon Earth. The ApoSle toucheth npoo them ; Heb. 3. a. Confider the .Apofitle, and High Priefi of our Profefflon, Jefus .Chris. Mark, the Apodlle mentioneth but two 'Quites, 'but they were the higheft in bush the Chiardkes:.the High Paieft was the higheft Officer in the Jewish Church 5 therefore, he faith, he was the High Priefl of our Profeffion : And an Aposle was the ;bighes Officer in the ChriftianChurch; therefore he faith, he was 'the Apoflle of our 4?rofefßon. Asa he taentioaslbut there two, becaufe there were the two Offices Chris .chiefly ptssformed, upon tEasah: he came so preach the Gofpél which we profefs 5 fo he is the Apofile of our Profeffion; and he came to ratify it with his Blood,lo he is the High Prier ßf site- Pus °sloe.
