r Ver. i9. the 17th Chapter of St. JOHN. 285 SERMON XXXIII. JOHN XVII.190 find for their fakes I fanc`tify my felf, that they a fo might be fanttled throitgb the Truth. THis is the fecond Argument; he had urged their Commiflìon, now his own Merit. Juftice might interpole, and fay, they are unwor- thy ; but Chrift faith, 1 fantlify my ß1f for them. He dealeth with the Father, not only by way of Intreaty, but Merit ; and applieth himfelf, not only to the good Will of the Father, as his Beloved One, but to his Juftice, as one that was ready to lay down his Life as a Satisfaftion. In the Text are two Things. I. A Meritorious Caufe; And for their foes I fanflify my fell. Where, I. ,uuis, the Perlon, who is reprefented under a double Notion, as an Efficient Caufe, I Sanaify ; and as the Objelt Matter, my Self 5 the Perronfanáifying, and fan- tified ; the Author, and the Objel ; the efficient, and the material Caine of this Sanctification. 2. yid; theAl3ion, what he did, &yi &fie. I fantïify. 3. Pro Rziibus ; The Perkins f o r whom this was done, f o r their f a l ¿e s, not f o r him- felf; he needed it not but f o r their fakes, - w ie &vrüiv. II. The Effe& of Chrifl's fanhtifying himfelf, that they might be fanflifred through the Truth. Where, 1. The Bleffing intended, that they might be fantlifred. It is bonum congruum, for in all things Chri(i muf, arp5rrívtsv, have the preheminence ; it is Goyim morale, not that they might be rich, happy, glorious, but fan&ilìed ; it is honor': fpecificativum, fuch as maketh an Evidence ; for none can make comfortable Application of the Benefits of Redemption, but the Sanhfified, who have Grace and Holinefs infufed in them, and do devote and confecrate themfelves to ferve God in Holinefs and Righteoufnefs all their dayes. a. The Means, Manner, or End, is á,\",9A34, it may be rendered through the Truth, in Truth, or for the Truth; all which pleadings admit of a commodious Explication. (r.) As the Means, through the Truth, as the Rule and Infirument 3 the Wotd accom- panied with the virtue of Chrifl's Death, is that which fanhtifieth. (a.) The Manner, in Truth, or truly, in oppofition to legal Purifications, by the ufe of the Ceremonies of the Law, which were but a Shadow of true Holinefs. Heb. 9. 13, 14. For if the Blood of Bulls and Goats, and the Aßres of an Heifer fprinkling the Unclean, lanciifyeth to the purifying of the Flefh: How much more fl:ol the Blood of Chr, mho through the Eternal Spirit offered himfelf without Spot to God, Forge your Confeienee from dead Works, to ferve the living God? And in oppofition to counterfeit Sanáification ; Ephef. 4. 24...ind that ye put on the Nero [Plan, which after God is crea- ted in Rïghteoufnefs and true Holinefs ; fuch as is fincere, true, and real. (3.) The End, for the Truth, that they may be confecrated, let apart, and fitted for that Funffion of Preaching the Truth. The Context feemeth to juflify this. From the whole Obferve: Doí4,
