Ver. z 9. the 17th Chapter 'of St. JO H N. 293 5. It is a means to the ref t Communion with God and Chrif here g 1 John'i. 6, 7. If we fay that we have fellowflsip with him, and walk in darlknefs, we lie, and do not the Truth. But if we walk in the Light, as he h in the Light, we have fellow/hip one with another. And everlafing Fruition of God hereafter; Alts 26. 18. That they may receive forgivenefe of Sins, and an inheritance among them which are fanaifiied by Faith that is in me. Heb. 12. 14. Without Holinefi no Man 'hall fee God. 7. It (heweth us who are partakers of the Benefits and Fruits of Chrift's Death. Heb. 2. II. For both he that fanelifleth, and they that are fanllifted, are all of one, where- fore he is not al/mined to call them Brethren. Heb. to. 14. For by one 0fering he bath per- felled for ever them that are fanllifred ; peddled but by degrees. The Elea themfelves, whilf they are unconverted, and remain in their Sins, have not the Anal Benefit of Chrif's Redemption : our dying Lord had an a&ual Intention in due time to fanaify; and accordingly doth regenerate, jufify, fan&ify all thofe who Ihall havé benefit by his Death. But who are the San&ified ? It is to be conftderedt Pofitively and Re- latively. Pofitively, It is to be renewed to God's Image; Titus 3. 5. He faved ur by the walking of Regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghof. 2 Pet. e. 4. That by theft we might be made partakers of the Divine S1Cature. This is the great Work of the San - &ifying Spirit, to make us like God, and to work in us thole Graces whereby we may be qualified and enclined to live to him. Relatively to be fan&ified, is to be feparated from a common to an holy Relation and Ufe. This is feen.in three things, Inclination; Dedication, and Ufe. 1. Inclination towards God. This is the immediate Fruit of Grace, called Conver- fion, or turning to God; the New. Nature tendeth and bendeth to him. 2. Dedication. 2 Cor. 8. 5. They flrfl gaze their own felves to the Lord, and unto sir by the Will of God. Rom. 6. 13. Todd pier felves Unto God as chafe that are alive from the Dead, and your Members as Inflruments of Righteoufnefs unto God. This is in en- tring into Covenant with God. 3. Ufeisnothing, but the exereife of this Difpoftion and Inclination, called, Living to God, or performance of this Dedication. 1 Cor. 6. 19, 2o. What, know ye not that your 'Body is the Temple of the Holy Ghofi which is in yon, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own ? But ye are bought with a price : therefore glorify God in your Bodies and Souls, which are the Lords. Zech. t4. 20. In that day fhall there be upon the Belli of theHorfes, HOLINESS TO THE LORD: Bythe latter there is a difference' between us and Others. r John 5. 19. And we know that tie ate of God, and the whole World lieth in Wtdtednefi : And between us and our felves; t Cor. 6. 11. Such were . tonne of you, but ye are walked, but ye are jufl fed, but ye are fanilifierl, in the Name Of our Lord efts, and by the Spirit of our God. This mutt be more explicite every day. Zfe 2. Dire &ion id the Lbrd's Supper. Here we come to remember Chrif's Sacri- fice, and to intereft our felves in the Fruits of it. 1. To remember Chrift's Sacrifice. As the Elements are let apart for an Holy Ufe, fo was Chrif fan&ified. All Sacraments reprefent Chrif dead. Baptifm ; hYe are bap- tized into his Death, Rom. 6. 3. In the Lord's Supper ; We (hew forth his Death till he come, 1 Cor. 11.26. his Body was broken, his Blood (lied. Chrif would infitute a Reprefentation of his Humiliation, rather than of his Glory, to reprefent his Love td us; it was for our fakes, rather than his own Honour i to reprefent what concerned us. 2. To intereft our felves in the Fruits of it. Look after the Fruits of it. Bewailing your Unholinefs, both in Heart and Life, that you were fo long train- ed up in the Knowledg of Chrift's Truth, and did fo little love God, and live to him 5 that God bath opened a Fountain for Sin and for Uncleannef, and you are no snore cleanfed to this very day ; and have gotten fo little of the fan&ifyíng Spirit, as if yod were Strangers in Ifrael. 2. Hunger and thirf for this Grace, his renewing, as well as reconciling' Grace,' Mat. 5. 6..Eleffed are thofe that hunger and thirfi after Righteoufnefs, for they fdall be filled. Delire it earnefly. 3. Lift up your Heatts with Confidence and Hope, when the Sacrifice Of Chriff is reprefented to you, becaufe God bath accepted this Sacrifice, and is well - pleafed with it. Ifa. 53. 4, 5. Study he bath born our Griq, and carried our Sorrows : yet we did efleem him, firicken, fmitten of God, and afflüïed.. For he wás wounded for our Tranf greffions, he was bruited for our Iniquities : the Chaf ifement of our Poire wai upon him, and With
