god SERMONS upon Serm.36, Creature, but not his Member ; a Limb of Satan, not a Member of Chrift. Chriffs Spirit is poured on all his Brethren, it is fhared among them, it is given to every Mem- ber as loon as they are added to Chtifl's Body. Now, how (hall we know whether we have the Spirit of Chrill ? Anfw. By Life, and Conformity. s. Life and Stirring. A Man may know whether the Spirit of Chrifl be dwelling in him ; as a Woman knoweth whether the Child in the Womb be quickned, yea or no, the knoweth it by the flirting : So you may know, whether the Spirit of Chrift be in you, by it's working. They are no Members of Chrift, that are not quickned by the Life of Grace; there is no withered Member in his Body. If a Member of a lingring Body be dead and numb, we rub it and chafe it, to bring heat and fpirits into it again : So do you feel any Grace ? any Spiritual Love ? 041.2. 20. hive, yet not I, but ChrJl liveth in me ; and the Life which 1 now live in the flefh, I live by the Faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himfilf for me. As we know there is Life by the beating of the Pulfes: So there is Spiritual Life, when there is a ftriving againfl Corruption, complaining of ir, fighing, groaning under it, feconded with a confiant endeavour to grow better. Thefe Sighs and Groans are in the greatefl defection. 2. Conformity. Where the Spirit of Chrift is, it fa(hioneth us into the likenefs of Chrift : 2 Cor.3. t 8. We all beholding, as in a Glafo the Glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame Image from Glory to Glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. It maketh us to reprefent Chrift, to be Inch as he was in theWorld, meek, holy, humble, ufeful, as if Chrift were comeagain to convene with Men. If you are ailed with an unclean, proud, carnal, wrathful Spirit, who is it that dwelleth in you ? whole Image do you bear ? There is a' changing, transforming Power, that arifeth from this Union, that we delight to do theWill of our Father, wherein the Conformity lieth chiefly : We [hall be humble, meek, gentle. e7/at. I t. 29. Learn of me, for 1 am meek and lowly of Heart ; thinking humbly of our felves, not afpiring after Greatnefs. This Spirit is a Spirit of Obedience, enabling us to look to our Father's Glory and Commandment in all things. We (hall have compaffionate melting Hearts to the miferies of others, as he had Bowels yearning to fee Sheep without a Shepherd. SERMON XXXVI JOHN XVII. zt. That they all may be One, as thou Father art in me, and I in thee, that they a fa may be one in ad : that the World may believe that thou haft fete me. Secondly. Am now to handle the fecond Branch , the Patern of' this Unity, As thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee. It is elfewhere compared three times in this Chapter, v. I r. ïva Zoo'ev real AA, that they may be One, as we are. Ver. 22. =MS ëµcls iv is uhv, that they maybe One, as we are One, and here =MA oh mal-sp iv imoi, anyv iv nod, as thou, Fa- ther, art in me, and I in thee: They are not only One, but in one another. It is that which Divines call rzR_,e çvvs, the intimate Inhabitation or In- dwelling of the Perlons in one another, without' any confufion of the feveral Subti- ftencies. Such is the Unity of the Divine Effence, that the Father dwelleth in the Son, the Son fubflfteth in the Father, and the Holy Spirit in both, without any con- fuflon of the Perfonalities. Now this is propounded as the Patern and Original Ex- emplar of the Myftical Union. The Arriano conclude, out of this place, that there is not an Unity of Effence among the Divine Perlons, but only an Unity of Love and Concord, luch as is between us and Chrift, and among Believers one with another ; óµaiáofa,
