Ver.2 t. the 17th Chapter of Sr. J O H N. 3o7 öFcatáma, not öF.aisma, [As] doth not imply as exaâ Equality, but only a Similitude of anfwerable Likenefs. In the Myftical Union, there is a kind of Shadow and Adumbra- tion of that Unity which is between the Perlons of the Godhead. So when Man ii Paid to be made after the Similitude and Likenefs of God; it Both not imply an ùniver- fal and exaa Equality, but only Come Conformity and Similitude òf Men to God: So, Be ye Holy, as lam Holy. Be ye perfeeí, as your Heavenly Father is perfeil. It is good to note, that in the Letter of the Text, Chrift feparateth his own Unity with the Father, from that of the Creatures : He doth not fay, Let us be all One ; but, let then, be all one. Again, he doth not fay, As thou art in us, and we in thee; but, As thou, Fa- ther, art in me, and I in thee. Hic fuam potentiam, e- Petri,,. à nabis fecerneret. A- gain ; in the next Claufe, he doth not fay, One with us, but m us. There is no com- mon Union wherein he and we agree. The Note is; Doit. That the Myfiical Z)nion carrieth fame ref mblance with the ZÏnion that is be- tween the Father and the Son. Here I (hall (hew ; I. The Unity between Grid and Chrift. II. Wherein the Refemblance ftandeth. I. The Unity between God and Chrift. There is a two -fold Union between God and Chrift. God is in him, and one with him, as the Second Perlon of the Trinity i and one in him, as Mediator. I. As he is the Second Perlon of the Trinity, there is an Unity of Effence intimated by this mepems, or mutual Inhabitation. Chrift is not the Father, but in the Fa- ther; to confound the Perlons, is Sabellianifm; to divide the Natures, is Arrianifm. He cloth not only fay, the Father is in him, but he is in the Father, to note a Conlubfian- tial Unity, that they both communicate in the fame Effence. At once he (heweth the diftinition that is between the Father and the Son, and the Unity of Effence that is between them. And as they ate one in Effence, fo one in Power. John so. 28, 29, 30. I give unto them Eternal Lift, and they fiall never perifb, neither Jhall any Man pluck themout of my Hand. My Father which gave them me, is greater than all, and no Man is able to pluck them out of my Father's Hand. I and my Father are One. They work by the fame Power. They are One in Will and Operation, their Altions are undi- vided; what the Father doth, the Son doth, tho by an Operation proper to each Per- fon. John ç. 19. What things foever the Father doth, theft alfo Both the Son likewife. They are one in Love, the Son lay in the Bofom of the Father. John I. 18. No Man bath feen God at any time, the onlybegotten Son, which is in the Bofom of the Father, he bath declared him. It is a Phrafe that expreffeth Intimacy. There is a mutual compla- cency and delight in one another. They are equal in Dignity and Power, and mull not be fevered in Worfhip. John 5. 23. That all Men fbould honour the Son, as the) honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which bath first him. Thus God and Chrift are One, as Chrift is the Second Perlon. This is the great Myflery, Three and One, and One and Three. Men and Angels were made for this fpeitacle; we cannot comprehend it, and therefore muff admire it. O lumina/Winne Te- nebre! Light Darknefs ! God dwelleth in both; in Light, to thew the Excellency. of his Nature ; and in Darknefs, to (hew the Weaknefs of our Apprehenison. The Son is begotten by the Father, yet is in the Father, and the Father in him; the Spirit pro - ceedeth from them both, and yet is in both ; all in each, and eaah in all. They were the more Three, becaufe One; and the more One, becaufe Three. Were there no- thing to draw us to delire to be diffolved but this,, it were enough. John 14.20. At that day ye flail know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. It is no fmall part of our Portion in Heaven. For the present, how much caule have we to bleu God for the Revelation of this Myftery ! Let us adore it with an humble Faith, rather than fealph into it by the bold enquiries of Reafon. It is enough for us to know that it is fo, tin we know not how it is. God were not infinitely Great, if he were not greater than our Underftanding. 2. Chrift and God are one as Mediator. There is a perfonal Union of the two Na- tures. The Father may beTaid to be in him,.becaufe the Divine Nature is in him ; he is Immanuel. In Chrift there are two Natures, but one Perlon.
