FIE firif fort of Propitiatory Sacrifices under the Law, is the Burnt- Offering ; this is fet down firft in that Enumeration of them, Levit. 7. 37. and taught fïrgt in this Book, as being the chief, and of molt common and continual life. I (hall fpeak to it fomewhat the more largely, becaufe it will give Light unto the other Sorts of Sa- crifices that follow, wherein we may be more brief. The Inftituti- on of it being recorded in this Place, I know not how to fpeak to it better than in the way of an Expofition upon this Chapter, borrowing: 21fò fotne further Light out of other Scriptures, and out of other Chapin tern of this Book, and particularly the 6th. where fomethings are further explained. It is called the Burnt- Offering, or the whole Burnt - Offering, becaufe it Was to be wholly burned and confirmed in the Fire, except only the Skin: In Hebrew ;117y- from the Root 117p afcendit, becaufe being wholly Burnt, it afcended and went up to Heaven in Smoak and Va- pour ; in Greek bto?avlWrca & ixoxays?ov, Confer on Lev. 7.37,38. of The fpecial Occafions upon which it was to be the general occafions of sa- offered, were many and various ; they may be srifzces.
