The Goffiel of the Sin-Offering. 247 The Iffue then is this, That the Sin- Offering relates to thole involun- tary kfirmities which are unavoidable, while there is a Bodyof Sin and Death, dwelling in usi and which are continent with Affurance and Sincerity. But the Trefpafs- Offering, to thofe greater Confcfence- rnafling and Soul- defolating Sins, which are incontinent with Affurance and true Com- munion with God; tho' k includes force leifer Sins, yet it extends to thefe alfo. 2. The fecond Law of the Sin -Offering is this, That there is a various Matter of this Offering, for four forts of Perfons that Sin and mils the may, which indeed are the Analyfis of this fourth Chapter of Leviticus. I. For the anointed Prieft, ayoung ,Bullock, Verf. 3. 2. For the whole Congregation, a young Bullock, Verfe. 13. 3. For the Ruler a Kid of the, Goats,. a Male without Blemifh, Verf, 2 , 4. For any particular Perfon a Kid, or elfe a Lamb, a Female with- out Blesnifh, Verf 27. And fo the Chapter divides it felf into thefe four Parts. t. The Sin-Offering for the anointed Prieft, zs a young Bullock, &c. Verf. 3, to 13. There is fame Difficulty upon this ; Who is meant by the anointing Priell ? Some restrain it to the High Prifl1 s n1 becaul`e none but he was anointed withmaterial Oyl. Thewoo in the Text is Hachohen bam- snafhiaoh, the Pries- that is anointed, Verf. 3. But if this be reftrained to the High Priest only, the Qne1Iion will be, what (hall become of the other inferior Priests? Is there no Sin -Offering ? Is there no Ex- piation for their Sins and Failings ? Doubtlefs there is. But we can- not well refer them: amongft the Common People of the Land, the Priefts and People being fo continually diftinguifhed every where t-hroughout the Scripture. Therefore it feems more congruous to conceive (as force do) that all the Prie.IjS are here included; and that the Word anointed intendsno mnóre but dedicated, confecrated, let apart unto that Work and Of- fice : Or that it may refer to that firft Confecration of them in Aaron their Fore-father, Exod. 29. 7. And thou /halt take the anointing Oyl, and pour it upon bis Head and anoint him. The Law is, if he fhall Sin k afhamath hyam according to the Sin of the. People, as our Tranflati- on renders it, that is, `like one of th.e Common People. For the Priefte were not made infallible, or impeccable by their Office; and there_ fore had need to offer for their own Sins, as well co for the Peoples, Heb S, 2, 3.
