The Gofpet of theSin-Ofering. 25' be fanned and rinfed. The Apoftie fpeaks of thefe (Heb. 9. ©.) di- vers Waf ,ings and carnal Ordinances, impofedon them till the time of Refor- mation. The Pharifees in Inch Obfervations as thefe, went beyond the Rule, (as Superfition is apt to do) but Chrift feverely Rebukes them for their high Strains of fuperftitious Devotion, Mark. 7.4, 8. But out of God's Institution here, we may fpell this Leffon of fpiri- tuai Inftruaion ; Namely, the ftrange Defilement, and deep Contagion and Pollution which is in Sin, that there is fo much ado for the cleanfing ofit; and what Care there fhould be to Purge and cleanfe our (elves from it, Heb. up. 19, 22"-- 2 Cor. 7. I. And to make it out a little more particularly ; if you would find out the meaning ofa Type, it is a good Rule toobferve the Scripture ufe of the fame Word, in the way of a Metaphor and Allufion. Nowwe find both wicked Men andgood Men compared to_,Earthen Veffels. It is a Metaphor concerning wicked Men, and the breaking is the deftroying them, Ter. t9. t t. P/al. 2. 9. e`er. 48. 38. Goal-will breakwicked Men and unclean Perlons withutter Deltruttion, as Vef., fels wherein is no Pleafure. But good Men alfo are called EarthenVeffels, and fo the Typemutt be accommodated a little other wife, 2 Cor. q.. 7. We have this Treafsre in Earthen Veffels. And fo the Cleanfsng thefe Veffels by wafhing with Water, points to the Spiritual Cleanfing, by the Spirit of Chrift, Ezek. 36. 25. and by his Blood, Heb. 9. 13,14. And Breaking, liignifies the utter Abolilhing of all Sin and Uncleannefs by Death. We are not fully cleanfed till the Veffel`be broken but then there is no more Defilement in the Veffel. And God will make it up again in the Refurreaion, as pure and holy as if it had never been defiled with Sin at all. Thus we have gone through the fpecial Laws of the Sin-Offering,, in thefe Five Heads ; For they do either concern the End, or the Matter, or the Blood of it, or the Burning, or fatly the Eating of it. I shall conclude all that hath been faid upon the Sin-Offering, with fame general Infirujions from the whole. t. We may here learn and be inftruaed, that even Sint ofInfirmi- ty do contralti a Guilt upon the Soul ; yea, fuch a Guilt as needs Atone- ment and Expiation in the Blood of Jefus Chrift. There are no Pi- eria? Sins, the leaft Sin is Death. You muff bring your Sin-Offering, if you expea to be forgiven. Do not flight Sins of Infirmity, for then they become more than meer Infirmities.
