Lying : A grievous Sin, and againft a double Light and Know- ledge ; both knowledge of the Rule, and of the Fad, which rifeth up in Mind' againft a Lyar when he fpeaks a Lye. It is ufually one of the firft adual Sins that breaks forth in Children, Pfal. 58. 3. The Wicked are eJtranged from the Womb, they go affray as foon as they be born, fìeaking Lies. And there be dreadful Threatnings againft it, fee Rev. 21.8. you that are Parents may do well to teach your Chil- dren that Scripture. Yet there is Atonement for this Sin alto. David fometimes told Lies to fave his Life ; but yet he was deeply humbled for it, his Soul clea- ved to the Duft about it, and melted for heavinefs, Pfal. 119.25, 28, 29. 4.. Perjury and falfe Swearing : A molt horrible Sin, for a Man to invoke the God of Truth to joys with him in a Lie, and to co-atteft and bear W itnefs with him to a Lie : And thisSin feldom efcapes un- punifhed, even in this Life. God ufually fets force vifible Mark and Token of his Vengeance and Wrath upon them, even in this Life, fer. 34.. 15--.18. Ezek.17. 15-18,19. Yet we have an Inftance, and but one that I remember in all the Bible, of a Man that found Mercy for this Sin, and that is Peter, who denied Chrift with Swearing and Curfing : But he went out and wept bitterly, and when his broken Bones were fet again, as in Na- ture they grow ftronger there than in another Place : So Peter grew very bold in Preaching and confefIing Chrift, whom before he had fo fearfully denied. Object. r. But there be divers Sins which are not here fpecified. Anfm. Yet they are included, and underftood by a Parity of Rea- fon: And there might be force Reafons given, why it might not be convenient to mention force Sins particularly, which yet were lncl - ded, and for which there was Atonement. As if a Man be overt ken in Drink, or Luft, or Paffion, raíh Anger, &c. thefe and all.ó- ther pardonable Sins, are included either in the Trefpafs-Offering by a Parity of Reafon, with the lnftances mentioned in the Text, or elfe under the Sin-Offering, or the Burnt - Offering. Object. 2. But force Sins werenot intended to be included in any of the Sacrifices of the Law : They had no Atonement, no Sacrifice pro- vided for them, as Murther and Whoredom. Anfw. This was for a fpecial Reafon, becaufe there was a Civil Pe- malty appointed in fuch Cafes, and for 'Each Sins extending even mito Death. And it had been incongruous to that legal and external Oil- penfation they were under, to appoint a Sacrifice to make Atone- mentfor Capital Sins, for which the Sinner was to be cut oft This Mm made i;
