The Cofpel of Solomon's Temple. 347 3. The Doors of the Temple. They were made with folding Leaves ; and for the San&uary, they were of Fir-tree, with carved Cherubims, Palm-trees and Flowers overlaid with Gold ; and the Ports of Olive- tree. But for the Oracle, both Ports and Doors were of Olive- tree, t Kings, Chap. 6. Verf. 31.35. Now for the Myftery of this, take thefe Hints: r. Cbrift himfelf is the Door of Entrance and Admittance into tl.e Temple and Prefence of God, Sohn ro. 7, 9. 2. The Ordinance ofAdmiffion into the Church, or keeping or/hut- ting out, is hereby figured alfo. For the Ufe of a Door is to let in force, and keep out others, Cant. I. 12. AGarden inclofed 's my Sifter, my Spou/e, a Spring (hut up, a Fountainfealed, Rev. 21. 27. There fhall in no Wife enter into it any thing that defileth, neither wbatfoever worketh Abomination, or maketh a Lye ;. but they which are written in the Lamb's BookofLife. And Chap. 22. 15. Without are Dogs, &c. q.. The Windows of the Temple, r Kings 6. 4. and for the Houfe he made Windows of narrow Lights. . Your Margin reads it, Windows broad within, and narrow without, or skewed and doled, Theywere made in that Form, for the better diffufron of the Light, and keep- ing out the Weather. Thefe Windows were of a great height from the Ground : For they muff needs be above theSide-Chambers, which were fifteen Cubits high, i Kings 6. io. therefore the loweft part of the Windows was fifteen Cubits from the Pavement. Whether the Oracle had Windows in it or no, is difputed on both fides. It is a Queftion alto, whether there was any Glafs in thefe Windows : But had the Invention of Glafs been foAncient, probably there would have been not only much Ufe, but exprefs mention of it in the Scripture. It is Paid of Ahaziab long after Solomon's Time, that he fell through a Lattice, 2 Kings i. 2. and thence force infer, that pro. bably Glafs-windows were not then inUfe. And indeed when was the firft Invention of Glafs, by that little fearch that I have made, I can- not find. I find no clear mention of it in the Old Teftament. For their Looking-glaffes were of polifhed Brafs, Exod. 38. 8. 1 know force render mifrepoth majim Jofh. r r. 8. and 13. 6. Fornaces vi- traceas, the Glafs- furnaces, which I confefs is ingenious. But it may be otherwife rendred ; and it doth not feem probable, that this la vention of Glafs was fo Ancient as yofhua's Time. Therefore the Windows of the Temple were open to the Air, and as to Ornament, we may fuppofe they were gilded or golden Lattices. But fo much for the literal Explicationof them. Y y z A
