Thefe Pillars were doubtlefs things of fpecial Remark and Ufe, becaufe the Holy Ghoft hath faid fo much of them, and hath defcribed them fo largely, both in the Book ofKings and Chronicles, and in the Prophet Jeremy, r Kings 7. Verf. 13. to 23. and again, Verfg.t.42. and 2 King. 25. 17. 2Chron.3. the 3 Taft Yerfes, and cap. 4. 12, 13. Ter. 51. Verf 17.20, 21, 22, 23. And Ezekiel law them in his Visionary Temple, cap. 40. alt. and it is faid concerning thefe Pillars, r Kings 6. 22. fo the Work of the Pillars was fini(hed, which ( as fome have obferved ) feems to put a fpecial Emphafis upon this above any other of the Uten- fils of the Temple : For it is not faid fo concerning the Cherubims, or the Sea, or the Candlefticks, or the Tables. I shall fum up very briefly what is written in thofe Scriptures of Kings, Chronicles and Yeremy before quoted concerning thefe Pillars, as to the literal Defcription of them. The matter they were made ofwas Brafs : The height was eighteen Cubits a piece, both of them amounting to thirty fix ; though there was but thirty five that did appear, one Cubit being loft and fwallow- ed up in the Conjuuaion of the Pillars and the = Chapiters thatdid a- dorn the tops of them : The Compafs or Circumference of eachPillar was twelve Cubits, the Diameter four ; therefore force read the r 9th. There were alfo on the top of thefe Pillars two Chapiters, as we Tranflate it, as much as to ifay, Heads, becaufe they were on the tops or heads of the Pillars. The Word is Kotberetb, Coronamentum ; fo AriasMontanus & fecit duo Coronamenta, duo Capitella, as Pagnin, two Coronets : It is from the Verb Kitter cinxit, circumdedit inflar Coroner It is the fame Word that is ufed in Prov. 14. t8. but the Prudent are crowned with Knowledge; 'vOtich is derived from "ether, Diadema, Coro- na. Thefe Chapiters or Coronets were five Cubits inheight, and but four Cubits Diameter; and therefore in an Oval Form: And fo the end of the Chapiter refted in the Hole which was at the topof the Pil- lar.
