396 Ì he Gofpel of the Table of Shew-bread in theTemple. 4. There is Frankincenfe fet upon the Loaves, and offered up for a Memorial before the Lord, Lev. 24. 7. This (peaks the Lord's re. membrance of them with Acceptance ; for the Incenfe made a fweet. Smell, a favour of Reif. A Man may remember a thing with Hatred and Abhorrence; but the Lord's remembrance of his People is with cleareft Affe&ion, with everlafting lovingKindnefs ; he bath a preci- ous remembrance of them. Thefe twelve Loaves, the twelve Tribes of Iliad are by Faith in Chrift a fweet Odour to him, as 2 Cor. z. is. And as the Lord's Eye is ever upon them : So fhould be to the Lord, and that continually. See Pfal. 123. I, 2. As the Lord faith of the Angels ; Mattb. 18. io. They do always behold the Face of my Father which is in Heaven : So the Saints even here below, they fhould fet the Lord always before them. And this is Happinefs and Heaven begun, t Kings i o. 8. Happy are thy Men, happy are thy Servants which (land con- tinually before thee, and that bear tby Wr /dom. The Lord's Eye upon them, In a way of confiant Care and Love : and their Eye upon him,. in a way of continual Dependance. This is a bleffed Condition. Thus you fee the fiat Myftery of the Shew- bread, how it was a Type of the Church. z. A fecond Myftery of the Shew-bread is the Foodand fpiritseal Pro- vifion which is in the Church of God : that is, Chri/i in the Word and Or- dinances. The Word is compared to Bread, Amos 6. it. Falfe Do- &rite to leavened or fowred Bread, Mat. 16. iz. It bath the pro- perties of Bread, Pfal. 104.. 15. Breadwhich firengtbenetb Man's Heart, ver. 16. the ftaff of Bread. ThisBread is Chrift : He is the Bread of Life, as 7ohn6. 48. Chrift is typified alto' by the Manna, and the Golden Pot thereof referved in the Holy of Holies. But fome diftitt- guifh the Myftery of thefe two Types thus. That the Manna in the Oracle was the Type of Chrift perfonal ; this Bread upon the Table in the Sanctuary was a Type of Chrift doärinal, or Cbri(i in the Word opened and applied, to hungry Souls. The Analogy will appear fur- ther in thefe particulars. t. They -were to fet the Shew-bread upon the Golden Table in the San8uary every Sabbath, Lev, z4.8. Every Sabbath (hall he fet it in or- der before the Lord continually ; that is, in the SanEuary, which was it Type of the Church. This then fpeaks thus much ; that the Minders of the Gofpel are to fet Chrift, the Bread of Life, as it were upon the Table every Lord's Day. There is, and ought to be a weekly Provi- fon of this Food in the Houfe of God every Sabbath. As everyWeek there was new Bread, fo Chrift is to be afrefh held forth. a. The..
