The Gofpel of the Table ofShen-bread in the Temple. 397 2, The Priefts were to feed upon this all the Week after ; Lev.' 24. 9. And it (hall be Aarons and bbs Sons, and they (hall eat it in the Holy Place : So in the Church, they that hear the Word and have Chrift preached and held forth therein, Mould live all the Week long upon the Provifion that is made upon the Sabbath. Then the Bread is fet before the Lord ; but in the Week time it is eaten. It is a great negle& when the Bread is not eaten ; when the Word is not Di- gefted, Meditated, Fed upon. But People think it is enough to come to force good Meeting, and there to hear the Word : But do you Eat it and Feed upon it all the Week ? Do you Meditate and Rumi- nate upon it ? 3. None but the Prieffs were to eat the Sbew-bread : It (hall be Aarons and bïs Sons, and they (hall cat it, Lev. 24.. 9. though in an extraordi- nary cafe others might : As when David and his Men did, to ,lave their Lives inhunger, i Sam. ii. 6. which Chrift allows and juftifies, Mattb. I 2. 3, 4.. for Ceremonial Rules tnnft give place to Moral. God will have Mercy rather than Sacrifice. But the ordinary Rule was, none but Priefts were to eat the Shew-bread. And who are fpiritual Priefts under the Gofpel ? All Believers, they are a Royal Priefthood, t Pet.2.9. This then teacheth us, that none but Believers have a right unto Chrift and to the Promifes, and do or can Feed upon him. Unbelievers do but intrude and ufurp that which is none of theirs, when they chal- lenge a part in him. They arebut Dogs that fnatch at ChiIdrens Bread, 4. It is the Prieff s that fet this Bread in the Sanáuary, and they eat it. We may here confider Priefts as Minifters : For the Levitical Mi- niftrywas a Type of the Gofpel- Miniftry. And fo the Infïruûion here is this ; That the Priefts fhould Feed and Live themfelves upon the fame Chrift, and the fame Truths they preach to others ; r Tim. 4.16. Take heed unto felf, andunto thy Doftrine; continue in them for in doing :bids thou (halt both fave thy Pelf, and them that bear thee. 5. There was Incenfe fet upon the Bread ; Lev. 24.7. And thou(halt put pure Frankincenfe upon each Row. Incenfe was a Typeof Prayer; fo the Word and Prayer fhould- go together. The foletnn Difpenfation of the Word fhould be accompanied with Prayer 2ûs 6.4. But we wité ,give our elves continually to Prayer, and to the Minifiry of the Word. It is laid of the Levites, Deut. 33. to. They /hall teach Jacob thy 7sadg- ments, and Ifrael thy Law ; they (hall preach the Word. They /hall put Incenfe before thee, and whole burnt Sacrifice upon thine Altar. Here is Prayer, and the Adminiftration of the Sacraments, which do fumed Íhnftead of the 7ewifh Sacrifices. 6. Chsiß
