402 The Gofpel of the Incenfe Golden Altar. And another Angel came and Rood at the Altar,. having a Golden Cenfer, and there wasgiven untobim much Incenfe, that be fhould' offer it upon the Golden Altar. And in i Kings 7.'5o. and 2. Coon. 4; 22 there is mention of Golden Cenfers in the plural Number. This Golden Cenfer was a little Pan made of Gold, with a Handle to it, fit to hold living Coals in, whereon to put the Incenfe 2. There was alfo a Golden Altar of Incenfe in the Temple ; and it is not likely that the Apoftle would whollyomit and pafs over this fo great an Utenfil, when he mentioneth all the reft Therefore that which we tranflate the Golden Cenfer, many do interpret it as meant of this. Golden Altar of Incenfe. But here a great Objeflion doth occur : Haw this is here Paid to 'land in the Oracle, or in the Holy of Holies ? For it is clear it Rood in the San&uary ; becaufe they were to offer Incenfe upon it every Day ; but they were not to enter into the Holy of Holies but once only a Year. The Anfwer that is commonly given is this ; That it ftood in the San&uary quoad fìtum ; but in the Holy of Holies quoad ufism, as to the Place and Pofition of it, it was in the San&uary, but yet it be- longed to the Holy of Holies in regard of the Ufe and Imployment . of it, which poflibly may be the reafon of the Alteration of the Form of Speech, Verf. 4. from what was ufed, Verf 2. The Holy ofHolies had the Golden Altar of Incenfe, becaufe it had a relation to that part ofthe Tabernacle, though it was not feated in it, as the Candle- ftick and Table were in the outer Sanecuary, Yerf. 2. The firft Inflitution of it is, Exod. 30. Verf r. to io. And Scia - mon made one for the Temple, r Kings 6. zz.. And the whole Houfe be overlaid with Gold, until he bad finifhed all the Houfe : Alfa the whole A1- tar that was by the Oracle he overlaid withGold.
