and its Appurtenances in the Holy of Holies. 411 Ifaiab, Ezekiel I. and Ifaiab 6. They were Piaures of young Men, though with four Faces : the Face of a Man, of a Lyon, of an Ox, and of a flying Eagle. They had alfo Wings, in Ifa: 6. fix Wings: For witb two they covered their Faces, with two they covered their Feet, thofe parts of the Body which are the Seat of Shame, and with two they did fly. There were two of them over the Ark ; and Solomon nude two more, which ftood with their Feet upon the Ground, or upon the Chariot of the Cherubims, as fome fuppofe, a Chron. 28. 18. the Text calleth them Cherubims of Glory, or glo- rious Cherubims. As to the Myflery of them, I find in Scripture-phrafe three things fignified thereby. I. The Angels of Heaven : Who are compared to Chariots and fiery Chariots, Pfal. 68. 17. The Chariots of God are twenty Thofand, even thoufands of Angels : Which faits with that Expreflion of the Chariot of the Cherubims in the Oracle, r Chron. 28. 18. and with that of the Apoftle Peter, who faith, r Pet. r. I2. The Angels bow down their Heads to pry into the Myfteries of the Gofpel, alluding to the Poftureof the Che- rubims over the Ark. 2. Kings and Magiftrates are called Cherubims in Scripture So it is fpoken of the Kingof Tyre, Ezek. 28. 14. Thou art the anointed Cherub that covereth ; and Ihave fet theefo : Thom waft upon the holy Mountain of God. It (peaks forth both their Dignity and Duty. The Magiftrate is to prote& the trae Religion and the Worfhip of God, as the Che- rubims did cover the Ark.. 3. Minifters are called Cherubims : fo inRevel. q.. thofe four living Wights are nothing elfe but four Cherubims, as you will clearly fee, if you compare that with Ezekiel's Vifion, Ezek. q.. But thefe Cheru- bims or four living Wights in the Revelation, cannot be interpreted concerning the Angels in Heaven : Becaufe they are faid to be redeem- ed by the Lamb's Blood, Rev. 5. 8, 9. which the Angels in Heaven were not. And moreover, the four living Wights are expreflydiftin- guifhed from the Angels in Heaven, ver. i r. Therefore it mutt needs be meant of a lower fort of Angels, the Angels of the Churches; that is, the Officers and Minifters of the Church, who (hould be Men of Angelick Spirits for Induftry, and Zeal, and Vigilancy in the Lord's Work. 6. The fixth and laft part of the Ark here mentioned, is the Mercy- feat. The Cherubims of Glory overfhadowing the Mercyfeat The Mercy - feat was the Cover of the Ark,ofwhich, Exod.25.17. The Hebrew word for it is Capporeth, from Capbar, to cover with Pitch, and in another G g g 2 Conjugation,
