Concerning the minßers of the word. t. " They hold, that the paftors of particular congregations are the 5t higheft fpiritual officers in the church, over whom there is no fu- °` perior pallor by divine appointment but Jefus Chrifl. 2. " That there are not by divine inßitution in the word, any ordi- " nary national, provincial, or diocefan paftors, to whom the paftors of " particular churches are to be fubjet. 3. " That no pallor ought to exercife, or accept of any civil jurif- " diétion or authority, but ought to be wholly employed in fpiritual offi- " ces and duties to that congregation over which he is fet. 4. " That the fupreme office of the pallor is to preach the word pub- " lickly to the congregation ; and that the people of God ought not to " acknowledge any for their paftors that are not able by preaching to " interpret and apply the word of God to them ; and confequently all " ignorant, and meer reading priefis, are to be rejefed. 5. " That in publick worfhip the pallor only is to be the mouth of " the congregation to God in prayer; and that the people are only to " teflify their affent by the word Amen. 6. " That the church has no power to impofe upon her paftors or " 0 officers, any other ceremonies or injunftions, than what Chrifl has appointed. 7. "That in every church there fhould alto be a dolor to inflruft and " catechize the ignorant in the main principles of religion." CHAP. IV. Concerning the elders. t. " They hold, that by God's ordinance the congregation fhould " choofe other officers as afiìflants to the minillers in the government " of the church, who are jointly with the miniflers to be overfeers " of the manners and converfation of all the congregation. 2.
