Voter for the The day before the recels of the parliament, [Sept. 8.] it was refolved vationLOfetthe by the commons, " That the Lords day fhould be duly obferved and Lord's day. " fanctified ; that all dancing, or other fports either before or after divine Natron, " fervice, be forborne and reftrained ; and that the preaching of God's N 482. r, word be promoted in the afternoon, in the feveral churches and chapels " in this kingdom ; and that minifiers and preachers be encouraged there- " unto. The chancellors of the two univerfities, the heads of colleges, all patrons, vicars, and church-wardens, are to make certificate of the " performance of thefe orders ; and all defaulters to be returned to parlia- " ment before the 3oth of Oc`íober next -- Ordered further, that all " ° crucifixes, fcandalous pictures of any one or more perlons of the trinity ; " and all images of the virgin Mary fhall be taken away and abolithed ; " and that all tapers, candlefticks, and bafins be removed from the corn- " munion-table. That all corporal reveTncesat the name of JEsus, " ° or towards the eaft end of the church, chapel, or chancel, or towards Ruíhw. " the communion-table, be forborne." Thefe orders to be obferved in all p; 3ß6, cathedral and collegiate churches and chapels in the two univerfities, by the refpeftive officers and minitters of thefe places, and by the readers and benchers of the inns of court. Houjeo} The houfe of lords confented to fome of thefe refoiutions, but not to lords djagree all ; they agreed in their committees, " That no rails fhould be placed withthe cam-cc about the communion - table, where there were none already, but not Nalfon, " to the pulling down of all that were let up; that all chancels railed 48r, 482, " within fifteen years paft fhould be levelled; that images of the trinity 483. " fhould be abolifhed without limitation of time ; and all images of the " virgin Mary erected within twenty years pat}." But as for bowing at the name of JESUs, they infifted that it fhould be left indifferent. So that when the queftion was put, to agree or not agree with the refolu- tions of the commons, it paffed in the negative, eleven againft nine. The commons therefore publithed their refolutions apart, and defired the people to wait patiently for the intended reformation, without any dif- turbance of the worfhip ofGod, and ofthe peace of the kingdom.
