" God the fearcher of all hearts, that during the time of my con– 'J'b~ " tinuance in this charge, I lhall faithfully labour to promote learning '' and piety in myfelf, the fellows, fcholars, and fiudents, that do or " {hall belong to the faid college, agreeably to the late folemn, national " league and covenant, by me fworn and fubfcribed, with refpect to all " the good and wholefome fiatutes of the faid college and of the uni– " verlity, correfpondent to the fa id covenant; and by all means to pro– " cure the good, welfare, and perfeCt reformation both of the college " and univerlity fo far as to me appertaineth." The other ma!l:ers were introduced into their feveral chairs after the fame folemn manner, their warrants bearing date the r Ith, 12, or 13th of April; but the claufe of the covenant was omitted by thofe who did not take it, as in the cafe of Dr. Witchcot, and others. The vacant fellowlhips being more numerous were not fo quickly fil– led, though the earl took the moll prudent method in that afttir; April 1 o. he directed a paper to the feveral colleges, declaring that " his pur– " pofe was forthwith to fupply the vacant fellowlhips, and defiring that " if there were any in the refpeCtive colleges, who in regard of degree " learning and piety, fhould be found fit for fuch preferment, they would " upon receipt of that paper, return him their names, in order to their " being examined by tbe aJlembly, and invelled in them." The perfons thns examined and prelented, were confiituted fellows by warrant under the hand and feat of t~e earl of Manchefler, to the heads of the feveral colleges, in the following form. " WHEREAS A. B. has been ejected out of his fellowfhip in this " college; and whereas C. D. has been examined and appro– " ved by the ajjemb!y if divines, thefe are therefore to require you to re– '' ceive the fa id C. D. as fellow in the room of A. B. and to give him " place according to his feniority in the univerGty, in preference to all " thofe that are, or lhall hereafter be put in by me." ·~ have before me the names of fifty-five perfons, who cifter tbey hadbeen examined by the ojfembh•, were prefented to the vacant fellowlhips in the compafs of the year 1644· and within fix months more all the va– cancies were in a manner fupplied, with men of approved learning and piety.
