In I 643· he was nominated of the alfem– .bly of divines, and fat among them till his correfpondence with the court was difcovered, by an intercepted letter to archbifhopUjher relating to their proceedings; upon which he was committed to lord P eter's houfe for a fpy, both his livings were fequeftered, and himfelf expelled the af. fembly. The doctor was a thorough calvinijt, but very zealous for the hie– rarchy of the church ; fo that when in prifon he publifhed the following .challenge. " wHEREAS I am certainly informed, that divers leCturers '' . and prea{;hers in London do in their pulpits, in a moft infolent ,., manner, demand where they are now, that dare ftand up in defence of " the church hierarchy, or book of common- prayer, or any ways oppofe " or impugn the new intended reformation both in doCtrine and·difcipline " of the church of England; I do, and will maintain by difputation or « writing, againft any of them, thefe three ~onclufions, I.
