Charles I. from one of the principalfcot's divines, profeifor Hamilton of Edinburgh. ~ the il:ory was invented by one of the fcots epilcopal writers, who had Hed to London, and was firft pu bli(hed in the beginning of the year 16 4 8. in a {mall pamphlet in quarto about two years after Mr. Henderjon's death. ·From this pamphlet Dr. Hey/in publithed it as a credible rejJort; between 30and 40 years after Hey/inhad publi(hed it, (viz.) I 693. Dr.Holling7vortb in his character of king Charles I. republiG1ed the paper abovementioned entitled the declaration of Mr. Alexander Henderfon, principal minifle; qf the word of God at Edinburgh, and chief commi!Jioner of the kirk of' Scotland to the parliament and jjnod qf England ; which paper the doctor fays he had from Mr. L amplugh, [on to the late archbJhop of York of that name~ from whom the hifl:oria ns above-mentioned, and fome others have copied it; but (fays my memorial ) upon publilhing the aforefaid fi:ory to the world, the affcmbly of the kirk of Scotland appointed a com– mittee to examine into the affair, who after a full enquiry, by their act of .Augujl 7· I 648 . declareJ the whole to be a forgery, as may be feen in the printed acts of the genera l aifc:mbly for that year, quarto page 420, .&c. in which they fignify their Cttisfac1:ion and affurance, that Mr. Hen– dnfon per6f1:ed in his former fentiments to his death; that when be left the king at Newcqfl!e ~e was greatly decayed in his natural ftrength; that Vid. hifi.
