Next morning, April I 3. the chancellor and vifitors, with a guard of mufquetiers, went to Magdalen-col!ege, and having broke open the doors of the prefident's lodgings [Dr. 0/iver], who was out of the way, they gave Dr. Wilkinfon poJTdiion. In the afternoon they went to All--Souls where Dr. She/don the warden appearing, and refufing to fubmit, re~ turned to his lodgings, _and locked the doors; which being broke open, the doctor was taken Jnto cufiody for contempt,_ and Dr. Palmer put in his place; from thence they went to 'Trinity-college, and having broke open the lodgings, Dr. Harris was put into poffeffion in the room of Dr. Potter. In like manner Dr. Cheynel had po!feffion given him of St. John's in the room of Dr. Bayly; Mr. Wilkins was appointed prefi– dent of Wadham college in the room of Dr. Pit; and Mr. Greenwood was put into poifeffion of Brazen-nqfe college in the room of Dr. Rad– c!ifle, allowing thofe they difplaced a month's time to remove their ef– £dts. But fome of the fiudents of Chriji's church having got the butSuff. Cler, tery-book, impudently cut out the names of thofe whom the vijitors had p. I34· inferred; fo that they were forced to return the next day, and write over again the names of their new dean and canons. The heads of col· leges being thus fixed in their feveral fiations, the chancellor took leave. of the univerfity, and departed for London; and having reported his 10:onduct April21. received the thanks of the two houfes. Reports the Bur Dr. Wilkinfon feti. aEd Mr. Cheyul, who returned with the · bebavi_our of chancellor, having reprefented to the ' parliament, that the fellows, ~;~'/,;~v;;{;Y_ fcholars, and under-offiers, fiill refufed to fubmit to their orders, it was ment. refolved, " that the vifitors ihould cite all the officers, fellows, and fcho– " Jars before them, and that .fuch as refufed to appear, or upon ap– " pearance did· not fubmit, 11wuld be fufpended from their places, and " their names returned to the committee, who were authorized to exlb. p. 134. " pel them the univerfity; and the 7U7V heads (on fignification of fuch " fentence from the committee) in conjunction with the vifitors, were " empowered to put.others in their places. They refolved further, that " the burfars lhould make no dividend of money till they had orders " from the committee; and that the tenants lhould pay their rents to '• none but the heads appointed by the authority of parliament." But the burjars abfconded, and were not to be found.
