It was addreffed to the people, and after they had repeatedly declared their di!like of the proceedings at Wiftminfler againfl: the king, they conclude in words to this purpofe, " therefore ac– " carding to our covenant we do, in the name of the great God, warn « and exhort all that belong to our refpective charges, or to whom we " have adminifl:ered the faid covenant, to abide by their vow, and not " fuffer themfelves to be perfuaded to fubfcribe the agreement if the peo– " pie, which is fubverfive of the p;·efent conftitution, and makes way " for the toleration of all herelies and blafphemies, and will effectually " divide the two kingdoms of England and Scotland. We earnefl:ly be– " feech them to mourn for the fins of the parliament and city, and for " the mifcarriages of the king himfelf in his government, which have " cafl: him down from his excellency into an horrid pit of mifery almofl " beyond example ; and to pray, that God would give him dfcctual re– '' pentance, and fanClify the bitter cup of divine difpleafure which di– « · vine providence has put into his hands; and that God would rell:rain " the violence of men, th at they may not dare to draw upon thcmfelves « and the kingdom the blood if tbeir Jiruereign."
