They are further authorized, to explain fuch ilatutes as are ambiguous and obfcurc; to determine appeals ; and are to be affifl:ed upon all occafions by the mayor, 1heriffs, and juilices of peace. The faid vijitors, or any four of them, are authorized to vi!it W eflminfler School, l/'i"ncbl!fter School, Mer– chant "'aylor's School, and Baton College; and to confider of fuch fl:a– tutes of the fc~id fchools as are fit to be abrogated, and of others that may be proper to be added, for the well government of the faid fchools and colleges. 'Iheir injluThe vifitors difcharged their duty with great fidelity; and the heads of enu. colleges had a watchful eye over their fever,d houfes; drunkennefs, [wear– ing, gaming, and all kinds of immorality, were fevetely puni!hed; all fl:udents, graduates, and others, were obliged to be at home in proper hours; the public honfes weare fearched ; and the practice of religion in the feveral colleges enforced with rigor. One of the profeiTors writes, that there was more frequent praCtical preaching in the colleges than ever had been known. On the Lord's day at different hours, there were three or four fermons in fever J! churches; and on the week da;s, leCl:ures on 'Iuo/days, Thurfdays, Frida)'S, and Saturdays.
