2 24 Final Judgment, and, of Divine Glory in the Creation and Guidance of all things, are fufficiently manifett. And hence it appears, how little force there is in that Ar- gument which Come pretend to be of fo great weight in this caufe. As every one ( they fay fhall be judged of God at the lail day, in the fame way and manner, or on the fame Grounds is he juJli, fled of God in this life. But by Works and not by Faith alone, every one fhall be judged at the lafl day; Wherefore by Works and not by Faith alone every one is jufiifred before God in this life. For I. It is no where Paid that we fhall be judged at the laft day, ex operibus ; but, only that God will render unto men fecundum opera. But God doth not juftifie any in this life fecundum opera ; Being juftified freely by his Grace,And, not according to the Works of Righteoufnefs which we have done. And we are every where Paid to be juftified in this life, ex fide, per fdem, but no where propter fdem; or that God juftifieth us fecundum fadem ; by Faith ; but not for our Faith, nor according unto our Faith. And we are not to depart from the expreffions of the Scripture where fuch a difference is conftantly obferved. 2. It is fomewhat ftrange that a man fhould be judged at the laft day, and juftified in this life, full in the fame way and manner, that is with refpeec unto Faith and Works, when the Scripture doth conftantly afcribe our Juftification before God unto Faith without Works ; and the Judgment at the laft day isfaidto be according unto Works, without any mention of Faith. 3. If yujlification and eternal judgment proceed abfolute- on the fame Grounds, Reafons, and Caufes, then if men had not done what they (hall be condemned for doing at the laft day, they thould havebeen juftified in this life. But many fhall be condemned only for fins againft the light of nature, Rom. 2. 12. as never having the written Law or Gofpel made
